  • “Is this where the Jew butchered that poor woman?”

    Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•Journal of Graphic Novels & Comics•2025

By using formal analysis and investigating the history related to the emigration of East End Jews in London, I discuss antisemitism in From Hell. From Hell provides various visual and verbal coordinates to suggest that the birth of the 20th century will bring antisemitic values and rhetoric which will, in turn, contribute to the Holocaust. In that way, Sir William Gull (or Jack the Ripper) is not just midwifing the twentieth century to bring upon…

  • Guilty of being a dwarf

Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•New Review of Film and Television…•2025

Drawing on interviews, online chat forums, magazines, and scholarly work concerning Peter Dinklage’s acting career, this article argues that although the TV industry positions Dinklage to play parts that address his restricted height, his performance as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones (2011–2019) permits exceptional visibility and complex roles for height-restricted actors in fantasy TV. This inspection of the fantasy TV genre and height-rest…

  • McDesign

    Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•Design Issues•2025

Drawing from game studies' and design studies' research concerning play design, this essay examines McDonald's video games and its collaboration with Nintendo and Kidzpace to create in-restaurant design play places. By examining these topics, this essay aims to explore how McDonald's designs their play areas and media products to promote their brand

  • Becoming Bond

    Open Access•Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•International Journal of James…•2024

Drawing on game studies and James Bond scholarship, and gleaning from advertisements and interviews with arcade owners and game designers, this article investigates the numerous 007 electronic games such as pinball games, computer games, video games, handheld games, and mobile games. Bond games are marketed as products that grant the player the opportunity to be Bond. This article explores that promise by analysing the various perspectives that t…

  • Public Pinball

    Open Access•Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•Contexts•2024

Ryan Banfi on the enduring appeals of the humble pinball machine

  • Disco Pinball

    Open Access•Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2024

This essay examines the influence of the pinball industry's late twentieth-century decline on Disco Elysium 's (ZA/UM, 2019) narrative. Reference points to pinball must be sought out in Disco Elysium as they are hidden, but once found they implore the player to consider the downfall of games. Gleaning from academic work on ZA/UM's text, archival research, pinball history, and by using formal narrative analysis this paper explains how the downturn…

  • Unplayable

    Open Access•Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•Television & New Media•2024•Referências: 2

This article argues that unplayability must be a considered component of game analysis and further discussed in new media studies. The concept that games cannot be or should not be played does not limit game analysis. On the contrary, the “unplayable aspect” of a particular game or genre of games is what must be investigated. This essay hopes to expand upon why new media such as video games are becoming inaccessible by using Nicholas Baer et al.’…

  • Gaming I, II, and III

    Open Access•Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2023•Referências: 7

This paper aims to create a shorthand for video game history – from video games’ infancy to the current subscription model that is dominating gaming. In this essay, I will apply the practices of historical media scholarship that have helped parse out television history (e.g., TV I, TV II, TV III, and TV IV) and film history (e.g., Cinema 1, 2, and 3.0) to define the various shifts in video game history. Gaming I represents the arcade and home sys…

  • Toward a Study of Pinball

    Open Access•Ryan Banfi•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2022

Drawing on game theory and interviews that were personally conducted with pinball pioneers—from CEOs of independent and corporate pinball companies to notable designers and historians—this essay argues that pinball machines are not solely collector’s items but complex games that contain original narratives. The narratives in the pinball games are not direct adaptations from the urtext, but rather narratives that arise through gameplay—the player’…
