  • Who Do You Think You Are?” The Epistemic Intimacies of Friendship

    Open Access•Alice Maclachlan•ARTICLE•Dialogue•2024

Preface This article was written before Andrea Robin Skinner, daughter of Alice Munro, wrote an essay in the Toronto Star on July 7, 2024, describing her mother's silence in the face of her abuse at the hands of Munro's husband/Skinner's stepfather, Gerald Fremlin. I wish to honour Skinner's story and her courage in coming forward, as well as her wish that “... this story, my story, to become part of the stories people tell about my mother.” I, l…

  • Applying co-production principles in research: Reflections from young people and academics

Open Access•Alice Maclachlan, Praveena Pemmasani et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Co-production, a form of collaborative working, is guided by principles including valuing all participants, building on individual strengths, blurring distinctions between roles, delivering benefits for all participants, building support networks and supporting people to deliver work themselves. This article explores how co-production is understood by young people and researchers and how co-production principles can be applied within a research c…

  • Difficult Conversations with Adam Smith

    Alice Maclachlan, Alice C MacLachlan•ARTICLE•Philosophical Topics•2023

What can Adam Smith can teach us about the emotional terrain of difficult conversations, particularly those that touch on lived realities of injustice, oppression, and marginalization? In Part One of the Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith takes a few pages to dwell on the topic of interpersonal disagreement: more specifically, on how differently we feel about disagreements “with regard to such indifferent objects as concern neither me nor my …

  • Raging better: Reflections on the Myisha Cherry's The Case for Rage

    Open Access•Alice Maclachlan•ARTICLE•The Southern Journal of Philosophy•2023

Myisha Cherry's The Case for Rage is a significant addition to the growing body of analytic philosophy that succeeds in not just engaging but shaping and even creating new forms of public discourse. It does so while remaining an exemplar for what good analytic philosophy should look like: filled with systematic and clear distinctions that illuminate rather than obfuscate real and concrete lived phenomena. I offer two challenges to Cherry's typolo…

  • Public mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic: Impacts on children's rights

Open Access•Alice Maclachlan, Christina Mcmellon et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2022•Cited by: 2

Restrictions on social and economic activities imposed by governments around the world in response to COVID-19, including the closure of schools and childcare facilities, have had a detrimental impact on children's mental health and wellbeing. Initial responses to support mental health during the pandemic have largely focussed on immediate support and crisis management. However, as governments plan for recovery from the pandemic it is important t…

  • Young People’s Rights and Mental Health During a Pandemic: An Analysis of the Impact of Emergency Legislation in Scotland

    Open Access•Christina Mcmellon, Alice Maclachlan•ARTICLE•Young•2021•References: 1

Emerging evidence indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic and government measures put in place in response to this have had a detrimental impact on young people's mental health. A children's human rights-based approach was taken to examine the impact of the legislative and policy measures that were implemented in Scotland in response to the pandemic on children's rights related to their mental health. Key concerns were identified around children's r…

  • Apologizing for Evil

    Alice Maclachlan•ARTICLE•Social research•2020

“There can be no morally adequate apology for true evil.” This intuition is so widespread it remains largely unargued for; I unpack it, responding to five interpretations of the claim that to be evil is to be beyond apology. I conclude that what motivates the assumption evildoers can’t apologize well is not so much the absence of certain necessary conditions or even a broad assessment of apologetic quality, but deeper fears about the moral signif…

  • Closet Doors and Stage Lights: On the Goods of Out

    Alice Maclachlan•ARTICLE•Social Theory and Practice•2012

This paper makes an ethical and a conceptual case against any purported duty to come out of the closet. While there are recognizable goods associated with coming out, namely, leading an authentic life and resisting oppression, these goods generate a set of imperfect duties that are defeasible in a wide range of circumstances, and are only sometimes fulfilled by coming out. Second, practices of coming out depend on a ‘lump’ picture of sexuality an…
