In Portugal, during the second half of the 19th century, a few individuals and institutions, guardians of archaeological finds, tried to publicize and preserve the mosaics that were being discovered. Mosaic pavements with figurative motifs, or emblemata, were removed from their original locations, mounted on plaster or cement supports, and framed for exhibition. In Portugal, there are currently more than thirty museums with mosaic fragments in th…
The decorative repertoire of the mosaics from the Conuentus Bracaraugustanus and their relationships with other mosaics of Hispania
In this work we intend to extend the comparative study of the mosaics of Conuentus Bracaraugustanus published in the Corpus to the mosaics from Gallaecia and from other regions of Hispania, particularly from the region between the Ebro and Douro rivers, considering different mosaic workshops operating in these areas. We also register punctual relationships between some compositional schemes, themes and motifs that occur in the mosaics of the Conue…

This project aims to survey and analyse the Roman mosaics belonging to the Conuentus Bracaraugustanus, whose capital city was Bracara Augusta. The Villa, in the parish of Sendim, Felgueiras, Porto, is part of the mentioned Conuentus. Its excavation began in 1992, with the uncoveri…

The earliest news about mosaics discovered in the Roman city of Bracara Augusta, dating from the second half of the nineteenth century, were mostly published in local newspapers. Only in 1976, after the creation of the Archaeological Field of Braga, the body responsible for carrying out rescue archaeology in the urban area, were some dozens of archaeological interventions performed, which allowed mapping, safeguarding remains and proceed a cultur…
Tavan Süslemelerinden Esinlenen İki Motifin İncelenmesi
For the present study, we selected a set of Portuguese Roman mosaics in which the orthogonal grid compositions and adjacent octagons forming squares are present, supposedly inspired by the coffered ceilings. Therefore, in this study we try to ascertain: 1. Their degree of proximity to the pattern of the ceilings that have originated them; 2. Their relationship with other patterns and decorative motifs, occurring in the same mosaic pavement; 3. Th…
Roma Portekiz Mozaiklerindeki Bazı Geometrik Desenler ve Dekoratif Motifler
Comparing some geometrical patterns and decorative motifs occurring in Roman mosaics from the West and the East, namely from Portugal and from Turkey, we aim to understand the reasons for the similarities and the divergences between them, attending also to the chronologies. In the first place we will focus on the “compass drawing” composition, its geographical expansion and some achievements of this schema on mosaics from the Western and Eastern …
