  • The path to xenopedagogy

    Gary Shank•ARTICLE•Chinese Semiotic Studies•2021

Thomas Sebeok coined the term zoosemiotics and defended it and its eventual successor biosemiotics consistently. These terms revolutionized semiotics by expanding its scope and moving it theoretically closer to Peirce and away from semiology. In this spirit, I would like to introduce the concept of xenopedagogy , or the process of teaching and learning applied to extraterrestrials. While there is a body of work around astrobiology, xenobiology, a…

  • Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment Implementation in the Emergency Department

Open Access•Arvind Venkat, Gary Shank et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2017

We sought to qualitatively evaluate impediments in implementing a novel Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) protocol into normal emergency department (ED) workflow for patients with at-risk drug/alcohol behavior. From 2010, administrative and nursing champions trained nurses at a single ED (census: 50,000 visits/yr) in SBIRT and incorporated SBIRT into normal ED nursing workflow in 2012. To qualitatively analyze impedi…

  • Regina Rex or, a semiotic fable from the end of education

    Open Access•Gary Shank•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2007

As soon as Tom heard his phone ring in the middle of the night he knew to listen for the chop-chop of the helicopter blades. By the time he had dressed and brushed his teeth, the chopper was waiting. He ducked the rotors and climbed into the seat

  • The Extraordinary Ordinary Powers of Abductive Reasoning

    Open Access•Gary Shank•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•1998

The psychology of cognition has been influenced by semiotic models of representation, but little work has been done relating semiotics and the process of cognition proper. In this paper, I argue that the semiotically relevant concept of abduction is crucial for this effort. Abduction is identified as the ground-state, or default, mode of cognition. As such, it deals with the issue of reasoning toward meaning and away from what Peirce called `genu…

  • If O-Ring Booster Seals Were Alive

    Gary Shank•ARTICLE•Mind Culture and Activity•1996

The following article is actually a five piece work built around an essay submitted to the Internet the week prior to the tenth anniversary of the Challenger disaster. The article discusses the juxtaposition of schooling and the Challenger disaster, and incorporates a collective response of Internet scholars to the basic theme. In a brief conclusion, the article is held up as a model for future sorts of collective Internet and print scholarly joi…

  • Semiotics and Qualitative Research in Education

    Open Access•Gary Shank•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 15

In this paper, I would like to show how qualitative research in education and semiotics can be brought together for the benefit of each field. Starting with attempts to define both qualitative research and semiotics in ways that can inform both disciplines, I hope to accomplish this task by mapping a series of three crossroads that define the past, present, and hopefully the future of the field

  • The Role of Abductive Logic in Understanding and Using Advanced Empathy

    Open Access•Allen J Ottens, Gary Shank et al.•ARTICLE•Counselor Education and Supervision•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Abductive reasoning, which is the basis of hypothesis formation, holds promise for facilitating the development of advanced empathy in counselor trainees
