In it he assembles a host of facts regarding the populations and economies of the countries from Japan to Pakistan, from China to Indonesia. His data are up to the minute; they include the change to extra-constitutional governments in Pakistan and Burma during 1958; the financial difficu…

THE DISTANCE which must be spanned in migrating is generally regarded as one of the principal factors influencing the number and characteristics of migrants which arrive at or leave a given point.' Because only fragmentary data have been available until recently, it has been almost impossible to form even a vague notion of the extent to which distance acts as a barrier to internal migration in the United States. Also relatively little is known co…

  • Differentials in Fertility and Levels of Living in the Rural Population of the United States

    W Thompson, Warren S Thompson•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1948

T HERE is a considerable body of information relating to differential fertility in the United States. The greater part of this relates to differences in birth rates and ratios of children between urban and rural populations, between different economic and social groups, particularly in the urban population, and between a few broad groups in different geographic areas-states, divisions, and regions. The differences in fertility of rural groups in …

    W Thompson, Warren S Thompson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1929•Cited by: 67

There are three types of countries in the world today as regards their population growth. Group A.-These countries have a very rapidly declining birth-rate, and although their death-rates are low their rates of natural increase are declining and they are rapidly approaching a stationary or decreasing population because of the general practice of conception control. Group B.-Birth-rates are coming under control in these countries, but rather slowl…

  • Population

    W Thompson, Warren S Thompson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1928•Cited by: 37

The data on the movement of our population during 1927 are of great interest in several respects. New low birth-rates have been achieved, the rate for the registration area being 20.4. This is kept from resulting in the lowest natural increase we have ever had by the very low death-rate of 11.4 (the lowest in our history). The infant mortality rate has also fallen to a new low level at 64.3. One of the most interesting facts, however, is that the…

    W Thompson, Warren S Thompson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1945•Cited by: 2

Population study has been determined at any given time by the social situation which indicated the investigation of a particular problem and by the interest of workers rather than by any "logical" development. This is shown by the rapid shift in interest from immigration to differential fertility, to future growth, to international growth and changes, to the internal migration and distribution of people, and to the consequences of these changes. …

population pressure cannot be an important factor in international relations, since the peoples who are contributing most to these tensions are by no means those whose poverty is greatest. Certainly there can be no doubt that Germany, Italy, and Japan, which are causing most trouble in the world today, have much better levels of living than many of their neighbors which at present manifest no urge to expand their borders. Indeed, in Italy and Jap…

The question of the relative rates of increase of the population of old native stock and of that of immigrant stocks is one which has attracted the attention of anthropologists and students of our population movements for half a century or more.Studies of population movements in New England made more than fifty years ago showed that the birth rate among the people of native stock had been falling steadily since 1800, and that the Irish immigrants…
