  • Zombie Bolaño

    Robert Wells, Robert S Wells•ARTICLE•Hispania•2020

This article interrogates two curious claims made by Roberto Bolaño in “El hijo del coronel,” an understudied and posthumously published short story about a zombie movie. The first claim is that the zombie feature upon which the story is based serves as a “biography or autobiography” of the writer’s life, and thus that Bolaño, too, is a zombie; secondly, Bolaño insists that the movie and zombies are about revolution. I argue here that one should …

  • Trauma, Male Fantasies, and Cultural Capital in the Films of Pablo Larraín

Robert Wells, Robert Marshall Wells•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This paper explores the visualization and intersection of trauma, male fantasies, and cultural capital in the first four feature-length films of Chilean director Pablo Larraín: Fuga (2006), Tony Manero (2008), Post Mortem (2010), and No (2012). Larraín’s first feature sketches out these themes in individual and familial terms; the subsequent three, forming what Larraín has called an ‘unintentional trilogy’ of the Pinochet dictatorship, visualize …

  • The Multitude

    Open Access•Robert Wells•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Ambivalence and antagonism are constitutive of the multitude and its relations. Such attributes tend to complicate how the multitude is conceived and how it operates; these complications, in turn, often lead to inconsistencies and contradictions in terms of the multitude's signification and application. This article argues that the various complications that arise specifically with respect to ambivalence, antagonism, and the multitude—primarily i…

  • Case Study

Robert Wells, Robert D Wells et al.•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•2000

RS is a ten-year-old Hmong (Southeast Asian) boy with a long history of hemodialysis for end-stage renal disease and hypertension. His parents clearly cared deeply for their son and had been compliant with treatment, but were suspicious about his medical care and his need to continue dialysis. Without notifying their pediatric nephrologist, they took their son off dialysis and traveled to a medical center several hundred miles away. When RS faile…

    Robert Wells, Roger Wells•ARTICLE•Policing & Society•1991•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The common assumption that there was an inevitable progress towards professional policing in England during the nineteenth century, after the creation of the Metropolitan Police in 1829, through a smooth succession of statutes, is challenged by this study of the implementation and non‐implementation of the 1839–40 Rural Policing Acts in the two divisions of the county of Sussex. The implementation of the Acts in East Sussex was achieved through a…

  • Southern Chartism

    Open Access•Robert Wells, Roger Wells•ARTICLE•Rural History•1991•References: 4

Chartism, the first genuinely working-class mass political movement, has attracted numerous general, regional, and local histories. The overwhelming proportion of these works concentrate on Chartism's strongholds in London, provincial urban centres, and the theatres of industrialism — including those in Scotland and Wales. Yet despite these regional characteristics, the common assumption is that Chartism was a national movement. This assumption i…

Jalal Al-e Ahmad (1923-1969) is an author whose writings during a 25-year career would warrant attention in any consideration of literature and society in Iran. That he has assumed special significance in the post-Pahlavi era can be explained by his efforts in the 1960s, in Nikki Keddie's words, “to achieve a kind of return from secularism to what he understood to be the true, progressive Islam...Al-e Ahmad found cultural roots and ties to the Ir…
