New place-based educational initiatives in the Welsh curriculum and some legacies of the Canadian experience
In this article, we examine aspects of new placed-based educational initiatives in the Welsh curriculum, and parallels with similar Canadian initiatives. The article grew out of an email exchange between its two authors, emerging from discussions of these matters—both at the level of philosophical underpinnings, and in light of the classroom and school experiences of those participating—in the context of a Welsh graduate class. The new national c…
Art of Coming Upon Something
This paper explores the nature and experience of artistic mastery, that is, the experience of being long-practiced in an art such as writing, oil painting and teaching. Following the hermeneutic tradition and drawing on H.-G. Gadamer’s Truth and Method and other hermeneutic sources, the authors engage in a dialogue about their respective experiences of what it means to become experienced in an art form. The origin of their dialogue springs from o…

Disproportion, monstrousness, and mystery”
The Fecundity of the Individual Case
Using the example of a beginning teacher's account of the experience of entering her new school for the first time, this paper presents a consideration of the nature of interpetive inquiry in education and how such inquiry treats ‘the individual case’. This is compared with how more traditional, quantitative studies might treat such cases. The pedagogic character of interpretive inquiry is then discussed

Following the work of James Heap, we examine a transcription of a particular lesson sequence, paying special attention to what we term the “asides” developed …

The Piagetian Picture of the World
Jean Piaget's genetic epistemology has given rise to a proliferation of empirical research into child development and to practically ef fective teaching techniques for early childhood educators. What is left unaddressed in such efforts is the question of the overall picture of the world out of which such efforts arise and in which they are grounded. This paper is a reflection on the Piagetian picture of the world and how the question of our place…

Reflections on Phenomenology, Pedagogy, and Phenomenology + Pedagogy

(Immanuel Kant, Introduction to the Critique of Pure Reason, 1964) This passage captures for me a vague uneasiness that I have felt regarding the image of phenomenology that has oc casionally been presented in Phenomenology + Pedagogy over the past few years. The latest issue has just arrived, and I …
