Open Access•Anna Lawson, Ieva Eskytė et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Public Space•2022

This article highlights the importance of ensuring that accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities, as required by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, is fully embedded in efforts to reduce the dominance of cars in city streets and promote more active modes of travel (including walking, wheeling and cycling) in line with global agendas. Drawing on emerging findings from the Inclusive Public Space research p…

  • The Anticipatory Reasonable Adjustment Duty

Open Access•Anna Lawson, Maria Orchard•ARTICLE•The Cambridge Law Journal•2021

The anticipatory reasonable adjustment duty, introduced by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and now found in the Equality Act 2010, has been hailed as an innovative and proactive tool for embedding disability equality in services and public functions. Despite important successes, the duty has had a surprisingly low profile in academic scholarship and has struggled to fulfil its practical potential. We seek to understand how this has happene…

Open Access•Ieva Eskytė, Anna Lawson et al.•ARTICLE•Alter•2020

Governments have responded to the Covid-19 crisis through various measures designed to reduce transmission and protect people judged to be at heightened risk. This paper explores the implications of such measures in the UK for disabled people, with a particular focus on measures designed to reduce and reshape the use of streets and public space. We divide UK measures into two broad categories. First, there are measures designed to reduce the use …

  • Multi-Scale Multivariate Models for Small Area Health Survey Data

Open Access•Anna Lawson, Andrew Lawson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

We propose a general approach to the analysis of multivariate health outcome data where geo-coding at different spatial scales is available. We propose multiscale joint models which address the links between individual outcomes and also allow for correlation between areas. The models are highly novel in that they exploit survey data to provide multiscale estimates of the prevalences in small areas for a range of disease outcomes. Results The mode…

  • The social and human rights models of disability

    Open Access•Anna Lawson, Angharad E Beckett•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 34

This article aims to reorient thinking about the relationship between the long-standing social model of disability and the rapidly emerging human rights model. In particular, it contests the influential view that the latter develops and improves upon the former (the improvement thesis) and argues instead that the two models are complementary (the complementarity thesis). The article begins with a discursive analysis of relevant documents to inves…

Eight to ten months after acute chlorine exposure, the Graniteville health screening participants under-reported respiratory symptoms when compared to abnormal spirometry results. The nature of this obligation is explained, together with the heightened profile given to it in the context of place…

  • On the Uses of Relativism

    Open Access•Eric Gable, R Handler et al.•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1992•Cited by: 47•References: 11

At Colonial Williamsburg, the idea that histories are interpretations that change in relation to changing social circumstances competes with a notion of history as "just the facts." The first approach, historical relativism, is more frequently enunciated in presentations of African-American history than in presentations of the history of the founding fathers. The museum thus asserts that black history is "conjectural," but it continues to present…
