  • Source-sink dynamics facilitate mammal recovery after unsustainable hunting in a community-managed natural protected area in the Peruvian Amazon

  • Proposed highway in the Peruvian Amazon threatens vulnerable indigenous communities and natural protected areas

    Open Access•Brian M Griffiths, David Dimitrie et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The conservation of biocultural diversity in the Amazon rainforest has become an international priority in the face of global change. Megadevelopment projects threaten conservation efforts and the rights of Indigenous communities to manage their ancestral lands. We examine the potential impacts of one proposed highway development project in the Peruvian Amazon, the Bellavista-El Estrecho Highway, on local and Indigenous communities and natural pr…

  • St-Century Stewardship

    Ava Y Goodale, Myron P Gilmore et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 19

Environmental stewardship education, as a locally oriented concept, benefits from being recast to account for the emergent, multidimensional, and interdisciplinary nature of today's most pressing socio-ecological issues. In an effort to infuse environmental stewardship education with global citizenship, instructional materials on community-based conservation in Peru were delivered to high school students in New York, USA. • Differential Use of Game Species in an Amazonian Indigenous Community

    Open Access•Brian M Griffiths, Myron P Gilmore et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2022

Hunting is a key subsistence strategy and source of income and food security for rural communities throughout the world. Hunters often gift game meat to their friends or family in return for reciprocation or other social benefits. We used interviews to assess how hunters in an Amazonian Indigenous community navigate the economic, subsistence, and social aspects of hunting. We found that hunters typically sell the most valuable and preferred speci…

  • Revisiting Optimal Foraging Theory (OFT) in a Changing Amazon

    Open Access•Brian M Griffiths, Mark Bowler et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2022

  • The socio-cultural significance of mineral licks to the Maijuna of the Peruvian Amazon

    Open Access•Myron P Gilmore, Brian M Griffiths et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 29

BackgroundThe overhunting of wild species is a major threat to biodiversity in the Amazon; yet, managed, sustainable hunting is widely considered part of the solution to conserving wildlife populations. Hunting is both a culturally important activity for Indigenous people and provides an important food source. Mineral licks, a focal point of hunting in Amazonia, are naturally occurring areas in the forest where animals come to obtain essential mi…
