Chapter 9. Feral fields of Northern Dalmatia (Croatia)
How do we identify ancient fields and farming systems in areas where the same spaces of cultivation have been used repeatedly over thousands of years? In the limestone karst landscapes of northern Dalmatia, on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, drystone field walls, terraces, and cairns are common features that attest to generations of working the land for agriculture. While confounding archaeological objects due to complex histories of reuse, drysto…
Bird Exploitation and Chicken Size in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Periods in Continental Croatia
The significance of birds in the medieval human diet has been greatly explored in Europe. However, there is a lack of systematic analysis of data from Croatia. Avian remains dated to the Late Medieval and Early Modern Periods from five archaeological sites in continental Croatia underwent skeletal and taxonomic analysis. Age groups were determined and sex identification was conducted using visual and X-ray diagnostics. Chicken bone measurements w…
Arheobotanička analiza „liburnske“ keramike s lokaliteta Nadin – Gradina
Kr. do sredine 8. st. pr. Kr. Organske primjese korištene su od na…
Liburnian lunches: New stable isotope data for the Iron Age community of Nadin‐Gradina, Croatia
The Iron Age in Central Europe is defined as a transformative time in local populations' lives including dietary patterns. Stable isotope analysis has become a valuable tool for investigating paleodietary and paleomobility patterns in ancient societies using samples of human and animal skeletal remains from individual burials. This is an isotopic study of collagen and apatite from Iron Age Liburian burials seventh to first century BC from Nadin‐G…
On the Edge of Empires: Exploring an Ottoman Legacy on the Venetian Frontier
The Ottoman Empire swept across southeastern Europe in the 16th century a.d., testing the boundaries of Venetian-controlled territories in the eastern Adriatic. In an area known as Ravni Kotari along Croatia’s central coast, Ottoman governance lasted about a century, but little is known about the material manifestation of conquest in the area. Here, we summarize the results of recent archaeological work at Nadin-Gradina, a hilltop settlement cent…
