Obesity
Obesity, or excess body fat, has reached pandemic proportions in the early twenty‐first century. Anthropologists study both the biological and the sociocultural causes and consequences of obesity. Throughout human evolution, selection favored physiological adaptations for efficient fat storage and energy use under conditions of periodic food shortages and high energy expenditure. Many populations are experiencing reduced energy expenditures as a …

Diversity in auxology
Auxology has developed from mere describing child and adolescent growth into a vivid and interdisciplinary research area encompassing human biologists, physicians, social scientists, economists and biostatisticians. The meeting illustrated the diversity in auxology, with the various social, medical, biological and biostatistical aspects in studies on child growth and development.
Global prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschoolers
Twenty-three studies reporting cross-sectional and longitudinal data were conducted in 14 different countries between 1998 and 2008. The number of preschool age children totaled more than 43,837 with one study not reporting a sample size. Studies used both international (i.e., International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), World Health Organization (WHO)) and national reference standards (i.e., United States - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention…

The Cannibal Within (review)
The Cannibal Within is an extended essay on the woes, delights, circumstances, and meanings of "That frightful feasting" (p. 197, citing Stone 1994) that Petrinovich argues has been and continues to be part of human nature. Petrinovich is an Emeritus Professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, and has a long-standing interest in death from natural causes and with human agency and acts of consumption. His other recent volum…

Social Norms, the Self, and Sociobiology
A. I. Hallowell tried to turn anthropology towards a sociobiology while the former field was still strongly opposed to any consideration of the evolution of human behavior. His work is of more than historical interest, however, because he stressed the evolution of the human ability to internalize social norms and evaluate self and others in terms of them. This ability is the basis of our species's trait of cultural rather than biological adaptati…

Salivary amylase activity in Samoan migrants
Whole saliva was collected from adults and children in three communities of Samoan migrants in Hawaii. Amylase isoenzymes were separated by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate membranes. Measurements weremade of amylase activities and protein content. Compared with reports of other populations, Samoans have a reduced number of a‐amylase isoenzymes and standard levels of salivary amylase and protein. Although the results are inconclusive, they pr…

Husband-Wife Interaction in Second Careers
A typology of husband-wife interaction is developed from interviews with 68 currently married artists age 50 or older who were engaged in art and craft fairs as a second career. The study provides an example of the linkages between work and family by indicating the extent to which the nature of work can influence the interactions of husbands and wives and the way in which husband-wife interactions can support work activities
