  • Spectral Features of Wolaytta Ejectives

Open Access•Firew Elias, Derib Ado et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 15

This study analyzes the spectral properties of word-initial and intervocalic ejectives in Wolaytta, an Omotic language of southern Ethiopia. Using tokens embedded in three vowel contexts, we examined mean burst intensity, spectral moments, and vowel perturbation following ejection. Results show that ejectives adjacent to high front vowels were produced with greater intensity, supporting the hypothesis that increased oral cavity tenseness correlat…

  • Metaphorical conceptualisation of happiness in Oromo

Open Access•Meseret F Hailu, Meseret Hailu et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2024

Previous linguistic studies have not addressed how happiness is metaphorically expressed in Oromo and thus this study investigates the metaphorical conceptualisation of happiness in the language. The data for the research were collected from an Oromo web corpus which has around five million running words. The analysis followed a bottom-up approach whereby words related to happiness were extracted from the corpus and then happiness metaphors were …

  • An acoustic analysis of Oromo vowels of the northern dialect

    Open Access•Feda Negesse•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2023•References: 1

This study presents the results of an acoustic analysis of Oromo vowels of the northern dialect. The data for the study were collected from 19 speakers (nine female, 10 male) who produced the vowels in the same phonetic environment. Such acoustic measures as duration, fundamental frequency and the first three formant frequencies were extracted for the analysis. In a linear mixed-effects model, each acoustic parameter was modelled as a function of…
