This essay reexamines the First Congress of Black Writers and Artists (1956) by focusing on how the rhetoric of Bandung solidarity manifests in Léopold Sédar Senghor’s provocative reference to Mao Zedong’s Talks at the Yenan Forum of Literature and Art (1942). This article asks how China has figured as a trope in Congolese literature from the Cold War and to the present. To do so, I analyze three texts: V.Y. Mudimbe’s Entre les eaux ( Between Tides ) (1973), In Koli Jean Bofane’s Congo Inc . (2014), and Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s Tram 83 (2014).
