The Explanation of Northeastern Paleoindian Lithic Procurement Patterns
Paleoindian groups in the northernmost areas of the East exhibited strong preferences for using certain sources of lithic raw material. The Paleoindian preference for cryptocrystalline, or at least fine-grained raw materials, is well-documented and does not need extensive elaboration here. The predominance of materials from one or very rarely two sources on many Paleoindian sites in the Northeast is most plausibly interpreted as indicating actual…
Dating the Late Archaic at the Davidson Site (AhHk-54), Ontario
A large series of 56 AMS dates are reported from the Davidson site, occupied during both the Broadpoint and Smallpoint Late Archaic. The focus is on documenting the occupation history of the site itself. The dates on various features often do not match superposition data or associations with diagnostics and provide a case study of the great potential for component mixing on such sites, which can go unrecognized without multiple dates from differe…

Strategic Legislative Subsidies: Informational Lobbying and the Cost of Policy
We analyze the strategic considerations inherent in legislative subsidies and develop an informational lobbying model with costly policy reforms. In contrast to other models of informational lobbying, we focus on the implications of a policymaker's and a lobby's resource constraints for lobbying activities. We allow both a policymaker and a lobby to gather information, and each can either fund or subsidize policymaking. Our analysis highlights th…
On the Reality of Gainey Points
Eren, Meltzer, and Andrews (2018. “Is Clovis Technology Unique to Clovis?” PaleoAmerica 4: 201–218) repeat claims made elsewhere that deny the existence of a Gainey fluted point type/complex in the Great Lakes-Northeast region of North America and its distinctiveness from Clovis. The literature they cite that purports to refute the existence of Gainey does not do so. In fact, that literature is irrelevant to the question, and they ignore the 50+ …
Early Fluted-biface Variation in Glaciated Northeastern North America
Most researchers argue that archaeological evidence for the Clovis technological complex, although documented across most of unglaciated North America, is absent in the glaciated Northeast, suggesting that early Paleoindian populations in the latter region were descendent from early Native American peoples associated with Clovis technology. If so, what are the earliest fluted-biface forms in glaciated northeastern North America? To refine develop…

Early Human Settlement of Northeastern North America
This paper summarizes current evidence for earliest human occupation of northeastern North America during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. We review evolution of the region's landscapes and evidence of archaeological chronologies as context for understanding human settlement of the region. Current data support limited evidence for pre-Clovis occupation south of the Laurentide glacial margin, followed by a significant temporal gap prior to…
Clovis Lithic Technology: The Devil Is in the Details
Clovis is the best known early development in North America buts its lithic technology is poorly documented and often from animal kill sites. This evidence has been used to picture Clovis peoples as mobile, colonizing, big-game hunters and explanations of lithic technological practices have been framed largely in materialist terms. Increasing documentation suggests views about how the complex Clovis biface and blade production strategies relate t…

Information Cascades and Revolutionary Regime Transitions
We combine Acemoglu and Robinson's model of the economic origins of democracy with Lohmann's model of political mass protest. This allows us to analyse the economic causes of political regime change based on the microfoundations of revolution. We are able to derive conditions under which democracy arises peacefully, when it occurs only after a revolution and when oligarchy persists. We model these possibilities in a world of asymmetric informatio…

Understanding Cache Variability: A Deliberately Burned Early Paleoindian Tool Assemblage from the Crowfield Site, Southwestern Ontario, Canada
The Crowfield site, excavated in 1981–82, would be a small typical Early Paleoindian campsite except for the added presence of a plough-truncated pit feature containing 182+ burned and destroyed stone artifacts. This paper reports on the latest insights into the feature contents based on continuing attempts to cross-mend fragments, as well as detailed analyses of the spatial distribution of artifact pieces within the feature itself. These results…

Changes in Patient Drawings of the Heart Identify Slow Recovery After Myocardial Infarction
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate how changes in heart attack patients' drawings of their heart over the recovery period relate to psychological and functional recovery. METHODS: Sixty-nine inpatients admitted for acute myocardial infarction at the coronary care unit at a metropolitan hospital completed questionnaires at discharge, including a drawing of what they thought had happened to their heart after their heart attac…

Evidence for Late Paleoindian Ritual from the Caradoc Site (AfHj-104), Southwestern Ontario, Canada
The Caradoc site, dating ca. 10,500 to 10,000 B.P., provides a rare glimpse of sacred ritual among the earliest well-documented inhabitants of the Americas. It is a kind of site never before reported, where the majority of the artifacts have been purposefully broken or sacrificed. The site yielded 302, mainly chert, lithic fragments that fit together to form at least 71 artifacts. The material includes an unfluted concave-based point, three bifac…
Glacial lake levels and Eastern Great Lakes Palaeo-Indians
This article investigates changing lake levels in the late Pleistocene eastern Great Lakes in order to gain insights into the Early Palaeo-Indian occupations. Significant new information bearing on lake level history is provided, notably the first well-documented deposits of a high water level above modern in the ca. 11,000–10,300 B.P. period in the southern Lake Huron basin. The lake level information, along with paleoenvironmental and site data…

Musical syntax and the problem of meaning in a central Australian songline
In the performance traditions of central Australia, musical knowledge is but one facet of an extremely complex ritual life. Through analysis of the musical variation observed between a number of different recordings of one composite Pitjantjatjara and Antekirinya songline, the authors attempt to clarify the structural features of the songline' musical system, which as a whole is much more stable than the associated extramusical exegesis. Although…
Estimating Failure Rates in Fluting Based on Archaeological Data: Examples from NE North America
The fluting of Early Paleo-Indian bifaces and associated failure rates have received considerable archaeological attention—perhaps at a scale exceeding its comparative importance. Nonetheless, if we are to properly evaluate explanations of the origins and purpose of fluting and the function of particular sites in Paleo-Indian settlement systems, estimates of failure rates are required. To date, such estimates have been based largely on experiment…

A Re-Analyzed Australian Western Desert Song: Frequency Performance and Interval Structure

t is dangerous to begin the study of an unknown musical system with preconceived ideas. Unfortunately, it is also inevitable. Even within a known musical system, the ear tends to normalize the many occurring deviations from the theoretical standard. When the system is unfamiliar the mind grasps at the few retainable elements and can (and often does) dispense with material which is basic to that system. The degree to which this can occur was reali…

Evidence for linear transposition in Australian western desert vocal music
Frequency analysis of a solo performance of one songline demonstrated a remarkable perfection and stability in frequency-production by the performer. This performance quality enabled us to carry out a detailed numerical analysis of the frequency transposition that occurred in this song. The average deviation of the actual transposition from a logarithmic model is larger by a factor of 40 than from a linear model. However, there are also considera…
Connection and disconnection of elements of the rhythmic hierarchy in an aranda song
The literature on Central Australian Aboriginal song has frequently made reference to the techniques used by performers to accommodate texts of different lengths (with their constantly-associated rhythms) to a fixed melodic contour. There are differing positions taken by researchers which range from that of Barwick, who postulates that “each act of performance involves constant checking of all levels of the rhythmic and melodic construction in th…
Ornamentation in Australian Vocal Music
Until the present time, my study of the music of the Aranda-speaking people of Central Australia has been in greater detail than my study of aboriginal music from other areas. This has been possible as a result of the large collection of sacred and ceremonial songs recorded in Central Australia by Mr. T. G. H. Strehlow. These recordings, supplied together with transcriptions and translations of texts, details of the function of each song, the rea…

Rom: An aboriginal ritual of diplomacy
In the introduction to this book, the editor notes that it doubles as documentation of a performance given by a north-central Arnhem Land Aboriginal group in Canberra in 1982 and as a catalogue of Aboriginal art exhibited in conjunction with that performance. The ceremony involved a traditional ritual of diplomacy and the reasons for its presentation in Canberra at that time are outlined
