  • Prevalence and Predictors of Hypertension in an Ethnic Population of South India

    Open Access•P Chandrasekhar Rao, P Venkatramana et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2013

The present study investigated the incidence and predictors of hypertension in the Mala community from rural areas of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, South India. A sample of 286 subjects comprising 139 male and 147 female aged 20-70 years was drawn randomly. Blood pressure was recorded with sphygmomanometer in the right arm in sitting position after a rest period of five minutes. Details on age, sex, family history, smoking and alcohol inta…

  • Association of Body Mass Index, Body Fat Distribution and Fat Patterning with Blood Pressure in Two Populations of Andhra Pradesh

Open Access•P Venkatramana, C Geetha Vani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2001

The association of systolic and diastolic blood pressures with body mass index, waist-hip ratio, conicity index, the sum of the three trunk skinfolds, the sum of the six skinfolds, the ratio of the sum of the trunk to the sum of the extremity skinfolds and relative fat pattern index and the correlations between each of these were examined among 209 and 204 adults of the Reddi and the Mala populations, respectively of Andhra Pradesh, India The cor…

  • An Estimation of Per Cent Body Fat from Triceps Skin Fold Thickness in the Malasof Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•P Venkatramana, P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2000

The data on Triceps skin fold thickness were collected from the Malas of Chittoor and Madanapalle taluks of southern Andhra Pradesh. From these data, specific gravity and percent body fat were calculated. In all these variables, females showed slightly higher values than males. Both sexes of the Malas of Chitto or taluk showed higher values than of Madanapalle taluk. The mean values of tricepssk in fold thickness and percent body fat showed highe…

  • A Note on the Origin of Jettis of Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•P Venkatramana, K B Hari Prasad et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2000

The blood and saliva samples were analysed for ABO, Rh (D) blood groups and secretor factor on 191 subjects of the jetties of Nellore and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh. The present data were c ompared with the data available on the Rajputs and the Jats of north India to test the validity of the information ab out the origin of the Jettis. Based on these data, it is not possible to throw light on the origin of the Jettis either from the Raj…

  • Multiple origins of the mtDNA 9-bp deletion in populations of South India

Open Access•W Scott Watkins, M Bamshad et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1999

The origins and genetic affinities of the more than 500 tribal populations living in South Asia are widely disputed. This may reflect differential contributions that continental populations have made to tribal groups in South Asia. We assayed for the presence of the intergenic COII/tRNALys 9-bp deletion in human mtDNA in 646 individuals from 12 caste and 14 tribal populations of South India and compared them to individuals from Africa, Europe, an…

  • An Epidemiological Study of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors

    Open Access•P Venkatramana, P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•1999

Coventry heart disease (CHD) is the largest killer in the developed countries and is rapidly assuming a similar trend in developing countries. The prevalence of this disease and its associated risk factors are more in urban setting than in rural areas. To determine the urban-rural differences of various risk factors, a population based study was conducted among males of Reddis, an endogamous population of Andhra Pradesh. A total of 110 and 102 ma…

  • The impact of energy intake and energy expenditure of activity on the familial transmission of adiposity in an indian population

    Open Access•Laura E Mitchell, A Nirmala et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1993

The effect of current energy intake and energy expenditure of activity on the familial transmission of five adiposity phenotypes was assessed using data from 473 nuclear families from the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Three measures of fatness, body mass index, the sum of six skinfolds, and the sum of three trunk skinfolds, and two measures of fat patterning, the ratio of trunk to extremity subcutaneous fat and the ratio of the subs…

  • A genetic study on the relationship between total finger ridge count and its variability

    Open Access•P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1993•References: 1

The relationship between mean total finger ridge count (TFRC) and its variability is examined using 43 male and 34 female samples from the State of Andhra Pradesh, India, using the approach of Jantz (1977) to verify the major gene effect. The mean TFRC is found to be inversely and significantly related to its variability barring standard deviation (SD). The F ratios are highly significant and the variation of TFRC due to coefficient of variation …

  • Dermatoglyphic affinities among the Telugu populations with contrasting ethnohistorical backgrounds

Open Access•B Mohan Reddy, P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1992

Using 22 finger dermatoglyphic variables (radial and ulnar ridge counts on each of the 10 fingers, total number of whorls and total number of loops per individual), affinities among the five endogamous populations of Andhra Pradesh with contrasting ethnohistorical backgrounds were examined. The samples constitute rolled fingerprints of 1,334 individuals of all ages, 736 males and 598 females, and were drawn from the three southern districts of An…

  • Commingling and segregation analysis of blood pressure in consanguineous and nonconsanguineous families from Andhra Pradesh, India

Open Access•A Nirmala, Treva Rice et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1992

The hypothesis of a major gene effect for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was examined in families from Andhra Pradesh, India, where consanguinity and marriage within caste are commonly practiced. The data were examined separately by noninbred versus complete (inbred + noninbred) families, both before and after correction for residual skewness. For SBP in the noninbred sample prior to skewness transformation, evid…

  • Distribution, endogamy, and isolation of Malas of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, India

    P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1984•Cited by: 1

In the present investigation, it is observed that there are at least six endogamous Mala populations namely, the Tangala, the Maladasari, the Pakanati, the Rampala, the Murikinati, and the Bommanati inhabiting the two taluks of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. From the projected distribution of these populations, it is evident that the populations show a regionality in their distribution, without any overlapping even when two different popula…

  • Consanguinity and inbreeding effects on fertility, mortality and morbidity in the Malas of Chittoor district

    P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1983

Of a total 885 marriages studied in the Mala population of the Chittoor district, 321 were consanguineous (36.37%), a figure higher than that reported previously by Sanghvi (1966) for the Harijans of Andhra Pradesh and Mukherjee (1974) for the Malas of Chandragiri taluk in the Chittoor district. The temporal trend of consanguineous marriages through the generations shows a decreasing trend towards the present generation. The inbreeding coefficien…
