Settler colonial theory and Canadian cultural nationalism
This article examines Canadian cultural nationalism since Confederation through the lens of settler colonial theory, engaging with questions arising from this exercise. Along the way it discusses how settler colonial theory meshes with other theoretical perspectives, particularly nationalism theory. The main body of the paper is a historical overview of how settler cultural production colonized Indigenous peoples symbolically from the mid-ninetee…

Trudeaumania
In 1968, Canadians dared to take a chance on a new kind of politician. Pierre Trudeau, a relative newcomer to federal politics, became the leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister that April. Within two months, he led the Liberals to victory in a snap election. His meteoric rise to power was driven by Trudeaumania, an explosive mix of passion and fear fueled by media hype and nationalist ambition. Exhilarated crowds greeted his appearances …

Trudeaumania
This article examines the 1968 Canadian Liberal leadership race and subsequent federal election with an emphasis on their cultural character rather than political events, situating them within currents of change that affected both Western culture and Canadian nationalism in the late 1960s. It explains how communications between candidate Pierre Trudeau, the media, and a portion of the electorate generated the unusual enthusiasm that was labelled …

Arrestin-2 and G Protein-coupled Receptor Kinase 5 Interact with NFκB1 p105 and Negatively Regulate Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated ERK1/2 Activation in Macrophages
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a recently described receptor class involved in the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity. Here, we demonstrate that arrestin-2 and GRK5 (G protein-coupled receptor kinase 5), proteins that regulate G protein-coupled receptor signaling, play a negative role in TLR4 signaling in Raw264.7 macrophages. We find that lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ERK1/2 phosphorylation is significantly enhanced in arrestin-2 and …
