The state of urban research: Views across the disciplines
An "urban" subfield exists in virtually every social science discipline, but these subfields seldom engage one another. We asked scholars from five urban subfields to respond to questions about the state of urban research within their discipline. This article consists of their consequent essays and reflections on their responses. The questions posed included the discipline's conception of "urban," the main concerns motivating the subfield, the pr…

Cities and Regions in Crisis: The Political Economy of Sub-National Economic Development

Action Research
Action research is a common journey for graduate students in education and other human science fields. This book attempts to meet the needs of graduate students, in-service teachers, and any other educators interested in action research and/or self-study. The chapters of this book draw on our collective experiences as educators in a variety of educational contexts, and our roles guiding educator/researchers in various settings. All of our experie…
Regions in a time of pandemic
This paper contributes to the current debate in the field of critical urban and regional studies on the meanings of the "regional" and the "urban".From a political science perspective, we focus on the European case.Firstly, we argue that the conception of the regional scale is not the same in various languages and traditions.Regions in Europe carry meanings and connotations that are not always easy to translate without losing their specific histo…
Devolution, disinvestment and uneven development: US industrial policy and evolution of the national network for manufacturing innovation
In the absence of a formal industrial policy, the USA supports manufacturing industries indirectly, and with minimal coordination. The resulting system constitutes a de facto industrial policy, whose contours and mechanisms are infrequently scrutinised. In this article we analyse a rare, recent federal effort to consciously design and implement the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI). We analyse to what extent regional Manufactur…
Rethinking regions in turbulent times
We live in turbulent times, but when has this not been the case? The history of regions and the ‘regional studies project’ has always had at its core concerns relating to new and increased social and spatial inequalities resulting from economic and political change. Whatever change has occurred to cause this turbulence, some people and places have taken advantage and raced ahead, while others were disadvantaged and left behind. The difference tod…
Firm strategies and path dependencies: An emerging economic geography of industrial data
This paper analyses how firms engaged in industrial data production in the power-generation industry operating within the US energy sector produce, collect, store, aggregate, analyse, and ultimately monetize and use industrial data. Industrial data activities are increasingly central to the strategic decision-making of firms in industries from energy to aerospace. This study focuses on whether industrial data production is dispersed and distribut…
Open government data in the smart city: Interoperability, urban knowledge, and linking legacy systems
Open government data (OGD) promise to reveal new insights and inform governance decisions related to changing populations, departmental operations, and economic drivers. Yet, where OGD figure prominently in the vision of a smart city, OGD are, in fact, scarce. From production and distribution practices to file types, organizational structure, and repositories, large quantities of potential OGD remain as legacy data trapped in incumbent systems. T…
Labour, work and regional resilience
Recent political and economic events have thrown into question several assumptions about how regional economies work and for whom. For Regional Studies, the result is a wave of policy-relevant empirical research on fundamental issues in our field. The papers in this issue cover topics including the creative class, skills, inequality, embeddedness, innovation and immigration, across a range of industries. This kind of analysis of labour, work and …
Connecting cities, revitalizing regions: The centrality of cities to regional development
This editorial and accompanying themed issue reflect on the centrality of cities to regional development. Focusing on the role and function of cities in processes of innovation, production, distribution and consumption as both individual sites and networks of sites of production, the papers examine classic questions in economic geography about concentration, diffusion, and flows of labour and capital and the policy regimes that govern that moveme…

Travel, collecting, and museums of Asian Art in Nineteenth-Century Paris
After a concise survey of recent writing on Western Collections and Museums, Chang divides her inquiry into four main parts: The Historical Terms of Euro-Asian Object Acquisition; Gold, Silver, and Bronze: Cernuschi’s Collection and Reappraisals of Europe and Asia; The Labour of Travel: Guimet and Régamey in Asia; and Equivalence and Inversions: France, Japan, and China in Goncourt’s Cabinet. Chang basically wishes to update and re-position art h…
Manufacturing by design: The rise of regional intermediaries and the re-emergence of collective action
This article illustrates the role of regional intermediaries in the return of manufacturing to cities and the centre of policy debates. The article analyses how supply chain, labour market and innovation intermediaries maintain, embed and expand flexibly specialised production capacity and create spatial variation. The article demonstrates how regional intermediaries support small manufacturers and enable firms to develop as a localised, networke…

Building bridges: Understanding student transition to university
This article explores challenges in ensuring effective student transition from school or college to university. It examines the complex liaison needed for students to progress to appropriate courses, settle into university life and succeed as higher education learners. Secondary data (international literature on transition and the formation of learner identity) are analysed to identify underpinning concepts. Primary data are taken from two studie…

The Problematic Church Building: History, Authority and the Liturgy of Church Closure in Australia, 1973–1998
Church closure in Australia is often a disturbing process even if handled well. Attachment to a building, especially if it is an historic one, is difficult to sever. The formal and symbolic separation is achieved through liturgy. This paper discusses a sample of liturgies used in Australian Protestant churches that closed between 1973 and 1998. The liturgies address the disturbance of closure by interpreting the history of the building and its co…
A typology of 'innovation districts: What it means for regional resilience
In this article, we engage the question of regional resilience theoretically and empirically. Our theoretical approach merges discussions of regional development in evolutionary economic geography (primarily UK based) with regional resilience in urban planning (primarily US based) using Markusen's industrial districts as a framework for analysis (1996). We use data on ‘triadic’ patents (USA, Japan and Europe) to measure regional innovation, both …
Sincere and Reasonable Men? The Origins of the National Council for Civil Liberties
The National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL; now known as Liberty) was conceived in the putative anti-left policing of political protest in 1934 but it was actually the result of a chance encounter in the press between Ronald Kidd and Lord Trenchard, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, at the end of 1933. Kidd’s campaign, which centred on the policies and actions of the Commissioner, attracted prominent cross-party backing for a civil lib…

Selective migration by birthweight SIR-Martyn et al suggest that selective migra- tion by birthweight may confound epidem- iological studies of early life experience and adult cardiovascular disease among migrants.'They found that the mean birthweight of men born in the north of England (Preston and Sheffield) who sub- sequently left their county of birth was higher than that of men who remained.Higher birthweight, they argue, is associated with …

Excavations of a medieval cemetery at Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh
A small archaeological excavation was undertaken at Holyrood Abbey in the spring of 1995 when human remains were uncovered by construction work to the west of the Abbey church. These formed part of the medieval cemetery and can be dated to the 14th/'15th century. A ditch pre-dating the cemetery may represent an early boundary to the Abbey precinct. Building debris, including glass and window cames, is attributed to damage incurred during an attac…
