Emotions as Lines
This article develops a sociological account of emotions as lines : dynamic processes that unfold over time, undergo interruptions, intensifications, and transformations, and become entangled with other emotional and social trajectories. Drawing on classical pragmatism and Ingold’s linealogy, it challenges static and substantialist accounts that treat emotions as discrete states or entities. Instead, emotions are understood as trajectories shaped…
Sensing Frames
Are expressions like “sense of responsibility,” “sense of community,” and “business acumen” merely metaphors, or do they refer to deeper, socially embedded forms of perception? This article introduces the concept of “sensing frames”: the socially learned, culturally shaped, and pragmatically enacted modalities through which people perceive and feel frames —the organizational principles that, according to Goffman, allow us to define the situation …
Cultivating hope
In this article I explore how the Ultima Generazione (UG) movement in Italy cultivates different forms of hope in times of climate crisis and ecological breakdown. Based on ethnographic research, I argue that hope is not a stable emotion or a fixed starting point, but a fragile, shifting process requiring ongoing care. I identify two key practices: building a supportive, nonviolent grassroots community, and performing high-risk civil disobedience…
(An)Aesthetic Emotions
This article presents a pragmatist framework for the sociology of emotions by introducing the concepts of aesthetic and anaesthetic emotions. Aesthetic emotions arise from disruptions of habits, generating emotional qualities that unify experience and reshape sensibility, and thus influence future emotional experiences. Anaesthetic emotions remain routinized, failing to expand sensibility or guide future experiences. I argue that aesthetic emotio…
Migration Intermediation and Ethical Boundary Work
This article examines the role of intermediaries in Italy’s legal-administrative migration field, focusing on how they navigate ethical dilemmas within a complex and bureaucratic migration regime. Drawing on 27 qualitative interviews with intermediaries handling visa and residence permit procedures, the study highlights the diverse landscape of actors—including profit-driven, solidarity-based, and rights-oriented intermediaries—who operate at the…
Negotiating Boundaries
This article explores the growing forms of collaboration between volunteers and professionals within the Italian refugee reception system through the lens of boundary work—an ongoing process of reciprocal demarcation and self-reflexivity that positions them in synergy, tension, or mutual opposition. Drawing on 33 qualitative interviews conducted at Italian reception facilities employing both volunteer and paid staff, this study explains why volun…
From hospitality to dwelling
This article examines migrant homesharing programs in Italy through a dwelling lens, which seeks to understand how homesharing transcends the home and provides new opportunities for migrants to build a life as more than temporary guests. Homesharing is a growing reception practice across the Global North, and it sees residents house migrants in their own homes. We start from a critique of hospitality as the primary organizing framework through wh…
Breaking images. Aesthetic activism in anti-speciesist movements in Italy
This article discusses some results emerging from qualitative social research about anti-speciesist aesthetic activism in Turin and Verona (Italy). Such activism aims to provoke moral-affective ruptures through the visibility of animal suffering. The social movements under examination are involved in call-to-responsibility action, through affective rupture. Some affective manifestations can be performed, under certain circumstances, as real acts …
Affective Ruptures
This article defines a possible pragmatist approach to the sociology of emotions by discussing and delimiting the concept of “affective rupture.” According to this approach, emotions emerge from the breaking of habits in the face of the transformation of situations, producing reflexivity and relational adjustments. The pragmatist approach problematizes the “rhythm” of emotions, made up of ruptures, moments of quiet, adjustments, harmonizations, r…
What affective rupture does. Disrupting affective citizenship in migrant solidarity
The aim of this paper is to show how emotions and citizenship are inextricably intertwined in the analysis of migrant solidarity. It does so by highlighting the ‘disrupting’ dimensions of emotions as processes that redefine the very criteria by which one is included or excluded, close or distant, intimate or foreign, in every situation. The essay draws on ethnographic research with Italian citizens doing solidarity work for and with migrants in F…
Solastalgia as Disruption of Biocultural Identity. The Mount Amiata Geothermal Conflict
Some residents of Mount Amiata in Tuscany, Italy, are experiencing emotional distress and solastalgia due to changes in their beloved land. Mount Amiata is witnessing protests by citizens' associations and activists who criticize the alleged social, economic, and environmental sustainability of geothermal energy. The analysis of the environmental conflict around geothermal energy on Mount Amiata contributes to the empirical use of the concept of …
George Herbert Mead e Norbert Elias. Un dialogo a partire dalle emozioni
The paper relates Elias' thought to Mead's, starting from the embodied dimension of emotions. The approach of the two authors to emotions is affected by a conception of society as deeply intertwined with biological and somatic aspects. Rediscovering and enhancing these aspects is configured as a radical challenge to the disciplinary barriers with which such topics are traditionally addressed. This allows to relate the thought of the two authors w…

The intimate life of criminalization. Affective governance in contentious migrant solidarity
This essay analyzes the affective and intimate dimensions of the criminalization of solidarity towards migrants. The core argument is that the criminalization of solidarity is a form of governance that acts through affectivity. It is mainly a way of containing migration by trying to govern the emotions of citizens, fostering feelings of hostility and fear while discouraging feelings of solidarity and empathy. The data that will be discussed comes…
Activist care
Care is activist when acts of care produce acts of citizenship: acts of breaking the dominant models of being responsible. This article has the theoretical objective of parsing how some acts of care become activist because they subvert the dominant norms of involvement and produce new ways of being mutually linked. They break established habits and social habitus, and they require new ways of acting and responding. This is what allows us to reint…
