From Empty Parking Lots to Border Fences
This article studies everyday bordering processes at the Finnish – Russian border during ‘times of stress’, specifically, following the COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of the war in Ukraine. The research is grounded in ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the summer and autumn of 2022 in four border cities (Imatra and Lappeenranta in Finland, and Svetogorsk and Vyborg in Russia). The study centres on visual and sensory observations made during the…
A visual essay of everyday life at the Finnish-Russian border after (and before?) the Iron Curtain
Everyday life at the Finnish-Russian border has undergone significant changes in recent years. The development of neighbourly relations and the growth of cross-border traffic and interaction, which began after the collapse of the Soviet Union, have been disrupted by border crossing restrictions and closures, a consequence of COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's attack into Ukraine. This visual essay provides an account of everyday life on the border ov…
Switching Cars with the Militsiya and Other Ways the Finnish–Russian Borderland is ‘Lived’ by People in Their Everyday Lives
Borderlands differ from more central areas of states as they are affected by different border effects, such as cross-border flows and the intermingling of societies and cultures. Yet, the ways people experience and practice borderlands by attaching meanings to the material and social space have received relatively little attention. The present study focuses on the Finnish–Russian borderland as ‘lived’ by people in their everyday lives. It is base…
Bringing borders back into cross-border regional innovation systems
International boundaries have been mainly considered as barriers in literature on the 'cross-border regional innovation system' (CBRIS), in line with their traditional understanding. In this paper, we underline that such a perspective presents limits, and argue in favour of an understanding of multidimensional borders that are subject to dynamic change over time. By mobilizing conceptualizations from the field of border studies, we examine the va…

Mental Mapping as a Method for Studying Borders and Bordering in Young People’s Territorial Identifications
This paper analyzes and compares two mental mapping studies – one with young people (aged 16–19) in Finland and one with Finnish and Russian young people (aged 9–15) in the Finnish-Russian borderland. These studies show that mental mapping is a valuable method which can illuminate crucial aspects of how borders and bordering are related to young people’s territorial identifications. We argue that it is important to pay special attention to the re…

City Twinning from a Grassroots Perspective
This article formulates a conceptual framework to analyze city twinning from the perspective of local inhabitants and applies it to the twin city of Imatra and Svetogorsk on the Finnish–Russian border. This “spatial framework” is inspired by Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad, which distinguishes between “perceived space,” “conceived space,” and “lived space.” These concepts are utilized to scrutinize the relationship between the concept of a twin ci…
