  • A new dataset of average years of schooling in Brazil, 1925–2015

    J H Walter, Thomas H Kang•ARTICLE•Economic History of Developing…•2024•References: 14

This paper presents a new dataset of average years of schooling (AYS) in Brazil between 1925 and 2015, using demographic censuses and household surveys as benchmarks. The dataset is also broken down by gender (1925–2015), race/colour (1925–2015), and state (1950–2015). In contrast to the Barro-Lee dataset, which reports an implausible AYS decrease in the 1970s, our dataset shows a gradual AYS increase in Brazil over time. We also show that women’…

  • The side effects of a big push growth strategy

Open Access•Thomas H Kang, Isabela Menetrier et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2024•References: 31

During the military regime in Brazil (1964–1985), enrollment ratios in primary education grew substantially in the first decade under dictatorship, but stagnated in the mid-1970s. This paper shows that education spending might depend on the levels of centralisation in tax matters. Using panel data regressions and qualitative evidence, we argue that a massive big push industrialisation programme increased the pressure on external accounts, leading…

  • Late and Unequal

Open Access•Thomas H Kang, Luis Henrique Zanandrea Paese et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 29

This paper presents a new dataset of enrolment rates and grade distribution ratios (GDR) in Brazil between 1933 and 2010, in addition to enrolment rates and GDR of Brazilian states from 1955 to 2010. To our knowledge, there are no previous estimates of enrolment rates by states for such a long period in Brazil. Enrolment rates and GDR in northern and north-eastern states were meagre and comparable to the lowest Latin American performers, and even…

  • Education and development projects in Brazil, 1932-2004

    Open Access•Thomas H Kang•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2018•References: 11

The Second National Education Regulatory Framework (2nd LDB), enacted in 1971, changed the grade configuration of schooling levels in Brazil. This change made it challenging to construct a valid and reliable education spending data profile for 20th century Brazil. Previous work on the economic history of education in Brazil used the data provided according to the thesis of Maduro (2007). Wjuniski (2013) used that database and ran structural break…

  • Educação para as elites, financiamento e ensino primário no Brasil, 1930–1964

    Open Access•Thomas H Kang•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2017

    Open Access•Thomas H Kang•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2011•References: 10

Justice and development in Amartya Sen's thought. This article aims to present an overview of Amartya Sen's thought, relating to his writings on political philosophy and his contributions to the field of development economics. This paper shows how justice and development are highly related in Sen's approach based on the concept of capability. Along with this paper, we will present some debates between Sen and John Rawls, beside other critics. Thi…

  • Instituições, voz política e atraso educacional no Brasil, 1930-1964

    Open Access•Thomas H Kang•THESIS•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 16

This dissertation aims to examine possible explanations for the backwardness in the expansion of Brazilian primary education between 1930 and 1964, despite the fact that Brazil achieved high rates of economic growth through promoting import-substitution industrialization. In particular, the roles of distribution of political power and decentralization in the expansion of primary enrollment rates are addressed. The data show that during the Estado N…
