  • Scots and Italy as seen through Alba amicorum , 1540s–1720s Part 2

    Open Access•Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•International Review of Scottish…•2023

Part 2 of this article continues its investigation into the relationships between Scots and Italy, as seen through books of friendship, by considering additional socioprofessional categories beyond the academic and military worlds. Among the political activists considered is David Graham of Fintry, a Marian and member of the Catholic party, whose album is studied in great depth. It is a key document for our further knowledge of his activities as …

  • Scots and Italy as seen through Alba amicorum , 1540s–1720s Part 1

    Open Access•Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•International Review of Scottish…•2023

The modern historiography of Scots in Italy has been relatively ill-served, which the present article seeks to redress in a limited way. The study of alba amicorum can be a great tool to assist in uncovering these peregrinating Scots, who went beyond the Alps and enhanced early modern Italian studies at various cultural, educational, and linguistic levels. Grouped under socioprofessional categories, the first part of the article explores the acad…

  • Scottish Northerners in Alba Amicorum , c . 1540– c . 1720

    Open Access•Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•Journal of Scottish Historical…•2023

The present article draws together two seemingly irreconcilable threads: firstly, the perceived and stereotyped violent, retrograde and inward-looking northern Scot and, secondly, the lettered world of humanist Europeans on the move as encapsulated in the tradition of alba amicorum (friendship albums). By reconciling these seemingly antinomic worlds of northern Scotland and humanist, scholarly culture, alba help redefine and nuance these Highland…

  • Scots and France As Seen through Alba Amicorum, 1540s-1720s

    Open Access•Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•E-rea•2022

The article will study the Scots found in alba amicorum from the 1540s through to the 1720s along socio-professional lines. The relationships developed by these Scottish contributors with the album owners are usually hard to decipher at the personal level within the strict confines of album entries. Yet certain findings emerge to appreciate and delineate the contours of these contacts which evolved according to the identity of these individuals t…

  • Intellectual and Practical Education and its Patronage in the Northern Highlands in the Century after the Reformation, Part Two

    Open Access•Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•Northern Scotland•2022

The first part of the article looked at schools and showed that a number of northern Highlanders, including from the lower tier of society, fully embraced the educational opportunities presented to them by the Crown. The second part uncovers the intellectual training of northern Highland women in a quite original and ground-breaking way. Then, access to university is explored to gauge numbers as well as social, geographical and kinship factors. A…

  • Scots and the Netherlands as Seen through Alba Amicorum, 1540s–1720s

    Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•Dutch Crossing•2022

The study of alba amicorum is still a relatively obscure yet growing pursuit in the Anglophone world. By browsing through these autograph albums, it is possible to unlock the names of Scots so long sunk into oblivion or simply reveal additional details and facets to the personality of those whose names have come down the centuries. Additionally, vriendenboeken weave networks of relations between Scots and Europeans expanding our understanding of …

  • Intellectual and Practical Education and its Patronage in the Northern Highlands in the Century after the Reformation

    Open Access•Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•Northern Scotland•2021

This two-part article presents a holistic approach and a comprehensive background to intellectual and practical education in the northern Highlands before the SSPCK. It underlines the way in which intellectual and technical education was experienced, consumed, but also encouraged in one culturally heterodox part of Scotland, essentially the northern Highlands, with its population of Gaels and non-Gaels, from around the Reformation until the mid-s…

  • Plantation

    Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•Journal of the North Atlantic•2019•References: 3

The article sets the Scottish and British Crown's colonizing measure vis-à-vis the Scottish communities of the North Atlantic arc within a broader imperial framework. Underlying such course of action was the articulation of a rhetoric as a vital linguistic tool for its plantations' raison d'être. The study delineates key aspects in the major plantation schemes of Scotland that were implemented between the 1590s and 1630s. Both the internal coloni…

  • The socio-economic relations between Scotland’s northern territories and Scandinavia and the Baltic in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries

    Open Access•Thomas Brochard•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2014•Cited by: 1

Traditional historiography has perceived the early-modern northern Highlands as a region that lacked dynamism and had little contact with the outside world. I propose to establish a mercantile framework between the region and the Baltic in a period of European conflicts, but also of commercial opportunities. I investigate the trading relations between an outlying society and Scandinavia, and explore the presence of northern Highlanders to add to …
