  • Probation and Parole: Public Risk and the Future of Incarceration Alternatives

    Open Access•Michael R Geerken, Hennessey D Hayes et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1993•Cited by: 5•References: 8

Jail and prison populations in the United States have continued to grow unabated during the past two decades but crime rates have not declined. Partly in response to the pressures caused by burgeoning correctional populations, the use of alternatives to incarceration has expanded. An ongoing debate centers on the effectiveness of these alternatives. Many criminal justice professionals and some researchers question whether such alternatives seriou…

  • The New Orleans Inmate Survey: A Test of Greenwood's Predictive Scale

    Open Access•Alfred C Miranne, Michael R Geerken•ARTICLE•Criminology•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Analysis of face‐to‐face interviews with 200 male inmates incarcerated in New Orleans, using a modified version of the Rand instrument used in California, Michigan, and Texas, showed the same highly skewed offense‐rate distribution but generally lower median offense frequencies. These lower rates are attributed to an improved instrument and method of administration and to Louisiana's much higher incarceration rate. A search for a prediction model…

  • Are Uniform Crime Reports a Valid Indicator of the Index Crimes? An Affirmative Answer With Minor Qualifications

    Open Access•Walter R Gove, Michael Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1985•Cited by: 108•References: 63

For more than two decades, the validity and reliability of official statistics on crime have been treated as highly questionable. Recently a number of studies have investigated the construction of official statistics on crime and issues related to their reliability and validity. However, there has been no recent attempt to bring together and evaluate these studies; thus, we do not know what official statistics mean and how we should interpret the…

  • At Home and at Work: The Family's Allocation of Labor

Marie Marschall Fuller, Michael R Geerken et al.•REVIEW•Social Forces•1984

Drawing on economic theory, the authors postulate that a family allocates work -- any work, be it housework, doing the shopping, or earning money outside the home -- on the basis of maximum utility to the family unit. Its ideas on utility are derived from such factors as its income, education, ideology. A carefully crafted research study confirms these ideas on the allocation of work and housework. The impact on the quality of family relationship…

  • Crime Rate and Social Integration The Impact of Metropolitan Mobility

    Open Access•Robert D Crutchfield, Michael R Geerken et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1982•Cited by: 71•References: 17

This article examines the effect of residential mobility on the crime rates of the 65 largest Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the country. Mobility variables and population size are found to be better predictors of some crimes than measures traditionally used to measure the opportunity structure. A contextual interpretation of the mobility/crime rate relationship is posited. High rates of mobility are believed to negatively affect soci…

  • Response Bias in Surveys of Mental Health: An Empirical Investigation

    Walter R Gove, Michael R Geerken•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1977•Cited by: 41•References: 6

A substantial body of literature indicates that (1) the tendency to yeasay or naysay, (2) the perception of the desirability or undesirability of a given trai, and (3) the need for social approval have a significant and independent impact on the statements made by respondents in surveys. Most investigatiors concerned with response bias appear to believe that these response bias variables act as a form of systematic bias which significantly distor…

  • Deterrence, Overload, and Incapacitation: An Empirical Evaluation

Michael R Geerken, Michael Geerken et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1977•Cited by: 8

This paper explores the effect of certainty of punishment on different types of criminal behavior. It is argued that deterrence theory, which treats the potential criminal as weighing the relative rewards and costs of a criminal act, is more applicable to certain types of crimes than others. The strength of the negative relationship between certainty of punishment and crime rate will thus vary by type of crime. It is argued that deterrence, overl…

  • Deterrence: Some Theoretical Considerations

    Open Access•Michael R Geerken, Walter R Gove•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•1975•Cited by: 61•References: 4

During the first half of this century, most research on deterrence suggested that punishment had little effect on behavior. These findings tended to confirm the ideological position of most sociologists, who generally assumed that criminal behavior was not and probably could not be controlled by legal sanctions. However, recent developments indicate that this assumption is in error. First, laboratory research (e.g., Banduara, 1969:292-353; Bandua…

  • Race, Sex, and Marital Status: Their Effect on Mortality

    Michael R Geerken, Michael Geerken et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1974•Cited by: 8•References: 11

This study investigates the hypothesized tendency of black families to have a matrifocal structure relative to white families. We compare the mortality rates of blacks and whites across sex and marital categories for types of mortality which are affected by psychological stress. The results suggest that there are no sharp differences in the marital roles of blacks and whites; however, the differences that do occur are in the direction predicted b…
