  • A revised high-resolution age–depth model for Żabieniec Mire, central Poland

Open Access•Maksymilian Jędrzejowski, Danuta J Michczyńska et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Radiocarbon dating is fundamental for establishing chronologies in palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, but the scarcity of well-preserved terrestrial plant macrofossils may necessitate the use of bulk organic fractions or other alternative materials. This study, focused on the Żabieniec Mire (central Poland), addresses the critical challenge of chronological consistency by comparing radiocarbon ages derived from multiple organic fractions and ma…

  • A record of Late Pleistocene environmental conditions at the transition from central to southern Europe from the Baix loess paleosol sequence (Rhône Rift Valley, SE France)

Open Access•Nora Pfaffner, Annette Kadereit et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

Loess–paleosol sequences (LPSs) provide valuable archives of Quaternary paleoenvironments. Here we present new data from the Baix LPS, comprising the entire Late Pleistocene. The Baix LPS is located at the western edge of the Rhône Rift Valley, France, in the transition zone from the presently temperate to the Mediterranean region of Europe. This LPS provides a missing link between the analyzed LPSs in the presently temperate regions farther nort…

Open Access•Christine Hatté, Valérie Daux et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Annually resolved radiocarbon ( 14 C) records from tree rings provide a high-resolution archive for investigating short-term atmospheric 14 C variations driven by solar and cosmic activity, as well as terrestrial processes, including geomagnetic modulation, stratosphere–troposphere exchange, ocean–atmosphere interactions, and tree physiological traits. While extensive data are available for the Northern Hemisphere, comparable high-resolution reco…

  • Elucidating the use of rhinoceros teeth by Neanderthals

Open Access•Alicia Sanz-Royo, Juan Marín et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2026

The use of faunal remains as tools by Neanderthals has long intrigued researchers. These remains include mammal teeth, which are particularly durable and resistant. Nevertheless, there is a significant gap in taphonomic analysis of dental remains, and archaeological experiments with tooth tools remain scarce. Recent studies suggest that Paleolithic groups may have used rhinoceros teeth as tools. This work seeks to elucidate this question by apply…

  • How precise can the calibration of a single radiocarbon measurement be

Open Access•Maksymilian Jędrzejowski, Christine Hatté et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•References: 14

Radiocarbon dating is a widely used method in archaeology and earth sciences, but the precision of calibrated dates from single radiocarbon measurements can be difficult to understand. This study investigates the precision of calibrated radiocarbon dates depending on the uncertainties of the measurement and the details of the calibration curve. Using data for the Holocene epoch and the IntCal20 calibration curve, over 1,000,000 hypothetical radio…

  • Variability of Radiocarbon Reservoir Age Effects in Lakes and Rivers in Anatolia and Lesser Caucasus

Open Access•Michel Fontugne, Christine Hatté et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 30

Multiproxy sedimentary sequence analysis constitutes the basis for reconstructions of past paleoenvironments and climate evolution. These sequences are, for the most part, obtained by coring in lakes, maars or crater lakes whose waters can record volcanic activity or karstic contributions, especially in Eastern Anatolia and the Lesser Caucasus. The reservoir age effect in these geological contexts leads to an apparent aging of the radiocarbon age…

    Open Access•Timothy J Heaton, Edouard Bard et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Cited by: 15•References: 3

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) concentrations in the oceans are different from those in the atmosphere. Understanding these ocean-atmospheric 14 C differences is important both to estimate the calendar ages of samples which obtained their 14 C in the marine environment, and to investigate the carbon cycle. The Marine20 radiocarbon age calibration curve is created to address these dual aims by providing a global-scale surface ocean record of radiocarbon from…

  • Is Classical Acid-Alkali-Acid Treatment Responsible for Contamination? An Alternative Proposition

Open Access•Christine Hatté, Jean Morvan et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 28•References: 9

It is well known that, during the widely used AAA pretreatment (de Vries and Barendsen 1954), alkali treatment is responsible for the incorporation of modern carbon due to the precipitation of atmospheric CO 2 as carbonate. Until now, the last step of the experiment, consisting in acid treatment (most of the time with hydrochloric acid) was considered to be sufficient to eliminate all of lab contamination. But wood, peat and sediment present a co…

This paper presents radiocarbon dates of terrestrial macrofossils from Lakes Gościąż and Perespilno, Poland. These data agree very well with most of the German pine calibration curve. In the Late Glacial, they generally agree with the data from Lake Suigetsu, Japan, and indicate constant or even increasing 14 C age between 12.9 and 12.7 ka BP, rapid decline of 14 C age around 12.6 ka BP, and a long plateau 10,400 14 C BP around 12 ka BP. • Δ 13 C of Loess Organic Matter as a Potential Proxy for Paleoprecipitation

    Open Access•Christine Hatté, P Antoine et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Paleoprecipitation reconstructions on the basis of pollen are well known, but they do not provide high temporal resolution for glacial periods. High-resolution paleoprecipitation reconstructions for the last glaciation based on the isotopic record organic matter in loess from Nussloch (Rhine Valley, Germany) are consistent with paleoprecipitation inferred from peat in the same area using an independant method. Thus, δ 13 C of loess organic matter…

  • Development of Accurate and Reliable 14 C Chronologies for Loess Deposits

Open Access•Christine Hatté, Luiz Carlos Pessenda et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 9•References: 12

Due to very high accumulation rates, loess sequences are best suited archives for the continental paleoclimate of glacial periods. Accurate chronologies cannot be easily established by radiocarbon-dating, because of the lack of organic macrorests, the only material for reliable 14 C dating so far. A chemical protocol is reported to extract the organic matter of loess (organic carbon content lower than 0.1% by weight) for accelerator mass spectrom…

This paper represents a synthetic overview of the main results of the CNRS Programme " Palaeoenvironments and Hominids ". This project focused on the study of interactions between human occupation and environmental modification, between 500 and 10 kyrs BP, based on multidisciplinary and diachronic studies of key sites in the Somme Basin. The main analytic results concern ESR, TL-IRSL and 14C dates, which reinforce the chrono-stratigraphical inter…

  • Development of an Automated System for Preparation of organic samples

    Open Access•Christine Hatté, Jean-Jacques Poupeau et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2003•Cited by: 9•References: 6

We constructed an automated system to transform organic samples to CO 2 , which included several options such as: combustion in 2 steps with collection of the 2 fractions, volatile fraction combustion, and 13 C sampling. The process includes organic matter combustion, CO 2 drying, quantification of the mass of carbon, CO 2 collection in a glass vial, and eventually 13 C sampling. The system is computer-controlled and -monitored. The apparent back…

    Open Access•Martine Paterne, Linda K Ayliffe et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Cited by: 8•References: 30

Paired radiocarbon and 230 Th/U dating was performed on 13 surface corals from submerged reefs in the Marquesas and from raised terraces in Vanuatu. The absolute ages of the corals analyzed ranged from 3000 to 15,000 cal yr. Estimates of the difference between the absolute and 14 C ages of these corals are in agreement with previous determinations up until 11,500 cal yr. The resulting mean sea surface reservoir age R is determined at 390 ± 60 yr …

  • C Sources and Distribution in the Vicinity of La Hague Nuclear Reprocessing Plant

COGEMA-La Hague nuclear reprocessing plant in the Cotentin Peninsula (northwest France) releases in the atmosphere about 19 TBq.yr -1 of radiocarbon. Three experiments in a terrestrial environment with sampling of a bio-indicator like furze were performed in 1997, 1998, and 1999, and additional air samples in the chimney plume were measured. Results presented here establish the 14 C distribution in the La Hague environment and suggest that a part…

Carbon dioxide partial pressure and radiocarbon activity were measured in air and seawater in the Bay of Seine and around the COGEMA-La Hague nuclear reprocessing plant (northwest France) during 3 cruises in 2000 and 2002. Results clearly show that the sea is a source of CO 2 and 14 C to the atmosphere. High 14 C concentrations in air and water related to the La Hague liquid waste are clearly recorded. For the restricted area of the Bay of Seine,…

  • Reconstruction of climate and vegetation changes of Lake Bayanchagan (Inner Mongolia)

The Great Plains of North America have a rich archaeological record that spans the period from Late Glacial to Historic times, a period that also witnessed significant changes in climate and ecology. Chronometric dating of archaeological sites in many areas of the Great Plains, however, is often problematic, largely because charcoal and wood—the preferred materials for radiocarbon dating—are scarce in this grassland environment with few trees.
