    HE HISTORY of the development of unwritten languages is unrecorded and must be learned by indirect methods involving the most tedious analyses, for which comparable details are only rarely available. The urgency of recording grammatical forms and texts with phonetic exactness has led to the neglect of vocabulary and usage.
