Identity and Territory. Jewish Perception of Space in Antiquity, by Eyal Ben-Eliyahu
A ‘New’ Decorated Basalt Stone Block from the Franciscan Excavations at Magdala (Galilee)
The article provides a first description and interpretation of the decoration, development and potential function of a worked basalt block found by Franciscan archaeologists before 2000 at Magdala/Galilee (“Magdala Stone II”). With this publication, the authors not only wish to contribute to the scholarly discussion on ancient Galilean material culture, but also hope to broaden the debate on two other, seemingly similar stone objects “Magdala Sto…
Anchoring Ancient Galilee at the Lakeshore: Towards Re-conceptualizing Ancient Galilee as a Mediterranean Environment
Galilee in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods: New Perspectives on a Dynamic Region
The Kinneret Regional Project Excavations of a Byzantine Synagogue at Horvat Kur, Galilee, 2010-2013: A Preliminary Report
le presents the preliminary results from four seasons of excavations at Horvat Kur in the Galilee. The excavations conducted by the Kinneret Regional Project have exposed the remains of a broad-house synagogue from the Byzantine period. The most important finds include an elevated platform (i.e., a bemah) that supported a chest holding Torah scrolls, an ornamented limestone seat that was probably used by the leader of the congregation, and a basa…

Archaeological News from the Galilee: Tiberias, Magdala and Rural Galilee
Recent years have proved very prolific for Galilean archaeology of the Greco-Roman Period, making the Galilee perhaps the most intensively researched area in a region that already belongs to the best-known of the ancient Mediterranean world. Of course, ongoing archaeological activity both in the form of field work and publications does not only increase the quantity of our available data and fill gaps in our records, it also helps improve methodo…
Religion, Ethnicity and Identity in Ancient Galilee: A Region in Transition
What is a Galilean? What were the criteria of defining a person as a Galilean - archaeologically or with respect to literary sources such as Josephus or the rabbis? What role did religion play in the process of identity formation? Twenty-two articles based on papers read at conferences at Cambridge, Wuppertal and Yale by experts from 7 countries shed light on a complex region, the pivotal geographic and cultural context of both earliest Christian…
