  • The Oxford Handbook of Global Realisms

Vaysman Vaysman, Katherine Bowers et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Global Realisms•2025

Realism is an artistic practice that aims to faithfully represent reality. Historically, it has been practiced across different media, from early pictorial art and epic oral narratives, through literature and visual arts, to film, music, and digital media. However, an understanding of what it means to “faithfully represent reality” is not universal; rather, it varies from culture to culture. The Oxford Handbook of Global Realisms brings the diver…

  • The Failure of Form

    Open Access•Katherine Bowers, Kate Holland•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2025

This article uses computational text analysis to examine Fedor Dostoevskii's The Double, responding to the long-standing critical debates surrounding the text and particularly its form, which Dostoevskii saw as having failed his idea. It asserts that the problem of the ontological status of Goliadkin's double can be productively considered through an analysis of the text's use of liminality, a hallmark of romantic fantastic literature. Introduction: Poverty is negatively associated with health and developmental outcomes. DNA methylation (DNAm) has been proposed as a mechanism that underlies the association between adversity experienced by mothers in poverty and health and developmental outcomes in their offspring. Previous studies have identified associations between individual-level measures of stress and adversity experienced by a mother during pregnancy and infant DNAm. We h…

  • Plotting the ending

    Katherine Bowers•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2020•References: 14

This article examines the epilogue of Dostoevskii’s novel Crime and Punishment from the perspective of genre and generic expectation. Considering two generic plots that appear in the novel, the detective plot and the redemption narrative, the author argues that the imagined reader’s generic expectation is both satisfied and thwarted in each case. The author introduces the idea of “generic stasis” to refer to Raskol'nikov’s situation vis-à-vis gen…
