Mapping Professional Roles in News Content Across 18 Countries
This chapter maps out general differences and similarities in journalistic role performance—specifically in relation to the presence of the interventionist, watchdog, loyal-facilitator, service, infotainment, and civic roles—across the press of the 18 countries analyzed in this book. Our data offer compelling evidence about the multilayered hybridization of journalistic cultures at the performative level, showing that the presence of professional…
Beyond Journalistic Norms
Chapter 12 critically discusses the main findings of the Journalistic Role Performance Project (JRP) , providing general and specific conclusions, as well as new insights, limitations, and potential lines of inquiry into the study of role performance cross-nationally.
Audience Approach
Based on a conceptualization of the audience as citizens, spectators, and clients, this chapter assesses how journalism approaches the audience by comparing the performance of the civic, infotainment, and service roles in news from 18 countries. We found significant inter-country variation in the performance of different analytical sub-dimensions of these roles. Data also reveals that the materialization of elements of these roles is context-sens…
Power Relations
This chapter analyzes the way in which role performance reflects the relationships between journalists and power by comparing news content produced by different media organizations across countries. Specifically, we analyze the performance of the watchdog and loyal-facilitator roles in the news. In order to have a better understanding of the interplay between the two, as well as their resulting hybridization, we draw from their specific indicator…
Detached or Interventionist? Comparing the Performance of Watchdog Journalism in Transitional, Advanced and Non-democratic Countries
This study proposes the interventionist and the detached orientations to watchdog journalism through the conceptual lens of journalistic role performance. Based on a content analysis of 33,640 news stories from sixty-four media outlets in eighteen countries, we measure and compare both orientations across different countries using three performative aspects of monitoring: intensity of scrutiny, voice of the scrutiny, and source of the event. Our …
The main aspects of Twitter use by the Spanish main political parties (PP, PSOE, Ciudadanos and Podemos) during the electoral campaign, prior to the June 2016 elections, are determined. After doing a content analysis on all the tweets generated by the candidates (n = 2,207), we conclude that the majority of patterns detected in the use of Twitter by other countries’ politicians do not apply to the Spanish case: in Spain the opposition’s candidate…
Credibilidad de los medios en España
The aims of this article are twofold: to examine attitudes towards news media in Spain in order to measure to what extent consumers are critical about them, and to establish possible predictors that characterize the individuals who are the most skeptical. A national survey showed that, in general, Spaniards trust their media, although they do not consider them to be impartial; it also revealed a set of typical characteristics of the more incredul…
La innovación educativa, subestimada
This research examines the attitudes of Journalism students towards educational innovation with a cross-national survey in seven countries. The goal is to observe the importance given by students to the educational innovation among a set of tasks, which professors have to develop in their academic work. The Spanish Journalism students underestimated the relevance of educational innovation. Women gave more importance to innovation in education tha…
Journalism Students’ Motivations and Expectations of Their Work in Comparative Perspective
Based on a survey of 4,393 journalism students in Australia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, this study provides much-needed comparative evidence about students’ motivations for becoming journalists, their future job plans, and expectations. Findings show not only an almost universal decline in students’ desire to work in journalism by the end of their program but also important national differences…
The Pre-Socialization of Future Journalists
While the role of university journalism education in the professionalization of journalists has been extensively debated, systematic and comparative studies of journalism students are still scarce. This paper reports the findings from a comparative study of journalism students in seven countries: Australia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. The data show a number of similarities, but also important differences betw…
