The Dynamic Effects of Personal and Corporate Income Tax Changes in the United States
This paper estimates the dynamic effects of changes in taxes in the United States. We distinguish between changes in personal and corporate income taxes and develop a new narrative account of federal tax liability changes in these two tax components. We develop an estimator which uses narratively identified tax changes as proxies for structural tax shocks and apply it to quarterly post-WWII data. We find that short run output effects of tax shock…
One TV, One Price
We study television prices across European countries and regions. Quality as measured by observable characteristics of televisions accounts for a large share of the international dispersion in prices. Rich economies tend to consume higher‐quality goods, but sizeable international price differentials exist even for identical televisions. The valuation of brands differs significantly across borders. EMU countries display lower price dispersion but …
Measuring the Impact of Fiscal Policy in the Face of Anticipation
Empirical estimates of the impact of government spending shocks disagree on central issues such as the size of output multipliers and the responses of consumption and the real wage. One explanation for the disagreement is that fiscal shocks are often anticipated. Due to misspecification of the information set, anticipation effects may invalidate SVAR estimates of impulse responses. We use economic theory to derive a fiscal SVAR estimator that is …

On Adjusting the Hodrick-Prescott Filter for the Frequency of Observations
This paper studies how the Hodrick-Prescott filter should be adjusted when changing the frequency of observations. It complements the results of Baxter and King (1999) with an analytical analysis, demonstrating that the filter parameter should be adjusted by multiplying it with the fourth power of the observation frequency ratios. This yields an HP parameter value of 6.25 for annual data given a value of 1600 for quarterly data. The relevance of …
Business Cycles in the United Kingdom
This paper documents the statistical properties of contemporary business fluctuations in the United Kingdom. We study the period 1956-90 using quarterly, detrended data on key aggregate variables. We compute selected moments of the data, compare our results with those for the United States, and rigorously test for dynamic instabilities. Our findings confirm the existence of substantive cyclical regularities, both across countries and across time.…
