Resilience of Territorial Socioecological Systems
The article develops a methodological approach to assessing the resilience of territorial socioecological systems (TSES). Despite the widespread use of the concept of resilience, its interpretation remains ambiguous and its quantitative assessment difficult. Resilience research is often fragmented across disciplines, which belies both the complexity of the challenges facing modern society, from economic problems to climate change, and the complex…
Nature-Based Offsets in Russia
The article discusses the key problems and conditions for the successful development of the industry of nature-based offset projects (NBOP) in Russia. Taking into account the state and prospects for development of external markets for carbon units from NBOP (voluntary carbon markets, national carbon markets, implementation of projects under Articles 6.2 and 6.4 of the Paris Agreement), the conditions for successful entry of carbon units from Russ…
Shrinking Urban System of the Largest Country
The article is a review of trends of the last decade in the development and study of the urban system of Russia and its largest agglomerations, Moscow, in particular. The features of Russia’s urban network are noted against the global background and key features, shifts in the urban network, including the ongoing concentration of people in major cities and urban agglomerations with the degradation of lower levels of the urban system—small towns a…
Spatial Equilibrium? The Difference of Real Income, Housing Markets, and Migration Flows between Russian Cities
The objective of the study is to assess, based on a case study of large Russian cities, the proximity of the country’s economic space to the conditions of spatial equilibrium, which is formed as a result of large-scale migration flows between cities and regions of Russia. To solve this problem, we assessed the real incomes of households of various composition with or without their own housing by Russian cities of different size. When calculating …
Migration and Investment Activity of Residents of Russian Cities in the Housing Market of Moscow Agglomeration
Based on the data on addresses of real estate buyers, we assess the investment activity of residents of Russian regions and cities in the primary housing market of the Moscow capital region (MCR) compared to the activity of their labor migrations to the MCR. The objects of our analysis are 149 Russian cities and 80 remaining parts of regions. This enabled us to analyze the specifics of migration and investment behavior for the first time, taking …
Relationship of Housing Construction in the Moscow Urban Agglomeration and Migration to the Metropolitan Area
Housing construction in the Moscow urban agglomeration is the main incentive mechanism for migration inflow via the lowering of such important barrier as housing prices. There is a positive feedback between the extensive development of the Moscow urban agglomeration and migration inflow to the metropolitan area, leading to hyperconcentration of population and economic activity. Theoretical analysis has shown that there is an equilibrium ratio bet…
Regional Differentiation of Buyers’ Activity in the Primary Housing Market of the Moscow Agglomeration
The regional differentiation of buyers’ activity in the primary market of the Moscow agglomeration (MA) is analyzed based on address data of the buyers’ initial registration. Acquisition of real estate by nonresident buyers (17% of transactions in Moscow and 23% in Moscow oblast) provides housing for about 100000 people per year, or 40% of the net migration inflow. The factor of the agglomeration economies gives leadership to buyers from St. Pete…
Housing construction in the Moscow agglomeration
In conditions of intense spatial transformation of the Moscow agglomeration (MA) driven by housing construction and migration from Russian regions, study of how these processes are interrelated has become an urgent task. In the article a new model of spatial equilibrium in MA is developed. Model includes three blocks: (1) a spatial equilibrium model for the labor and housing markets in the MA; (2) a model of dynamic equilibrium between migration …
