Axiomatic Foundation of Central Place Theory
The article refines the axiomatic foundation of central place theory (CPT) and identifies the possibilities and limitations of a logical transition in research from real settlement systems to central place (CP) systems. The necessity of relying on the CPT axioms in the following form is determined: (1) the space of a CP system is not infinite, but finite: the basis of each system is formed by an isolated lattice; the theory deals with physical sp…
Territorial organization of the population and economy of Russia on the brink of tectonic shifts
According to D. Trenin, profound geopolitical changes led to the fact that instead of a Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok, the formation of Eurasia from Shanghai to St. Petersburg is seen. Under these conditions, the main defect of Russia’s geopolitical position is its extreme weakness in the Far East. It is necessary to accelerate the development of Vladivostok, so that in 15–20 years it could be Russia’s third most important city, a Pacific Pet…
Moscow city expansion
In this paper, the authors criticize the recent decision to expand Moscow’s territory in its administrative borders by 2.35 times. A significantly more reasonable decision would come from the central place theory and, first of all, from its relativistic modification that describes agglomeration as an extreme degree of compactness within an urban settlement network covering a territory of dozens or hundreds of thousands of square miles. We introdu…
Methodology of geography
A unique alliance of geographers and philosophers of science in dealing with methodological problems of geography emerged in the Soviet Union as early as 1983. This led to the enrichment of geographic science in advanced philosophical concepts, such as the notion of polymorphism of theoretical knowledge, the understanding of structure as an invariant aspect of a system developed by N.F. Ovchinnikov, and the theory of social relays created by M.A.…
Development of theoretical concepts in spatial analysis
The emergence and development of spatial analysis is a result of a successful collection program, which laid the foundation for theoretical geography (a second-order program). The systemic approach has contributed to spatial analysis with insights into the structure as an invariant aspect of the system, structural isomorphism, and emergence. A synergetic approach should contribute to the development of concepts about salient time and space time a…
