After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Croatian language found itself in a new situation, exposed to unitarist tendencies within a South Slavic state. During the Second World War and the fascist Indepen…

    Open Access•Amir Kapetanović•ARTICLE•Studia Ceranea Journal of the…•2017

The linguistic situation in medieval Croatia was fairly dynamic. The present article discusses the stratification of linguistic culture in the Middle Ages as regards its division into the three registers (high, middle, low) inherited from ancient rhetoric and poetry and received in the Middle Ages. We conclude that there was no strict division among the three languages according to function in the Middle Ages, and that the languages themselves di…

  • Centuries-Long Trends in the Linguistic Integration of Croatian Society

    Open Access•Amir Kapetanović•ARTICLE•Slovene•2012

The article discusses the history of the Croatian language, particularly the paths of the gradual linguistic integration of all Croats and the development of the standard language (based upon the Štokavian dialect) within Croatian society, whose members have spoken three dialects (Čakavian, Štokavian, Kajkavian) since the Middle Ages. Because of the multidialectal situation (all three dialects played an important role in the history of the Croati…
