  • Normative and Interpretive Paradigms in Sociology

    T P Wilson•CHAPTER•Everyday Life•2017

This chapter outlines the basic notions of the normative paradigm and shows how they underlie such widely divergent perspectives as operant-conditioning theories of behavior and conventional sociological theories employing the notions of culture, social structure, and socialization. It describes an alternative perspective based on the notion of social interaction as an interpretive process. The phenomena of interest in sociological investigation …

  • Qualitative "Versus" Quantitative Methods in Social Research

    Open Access•T P Wilson•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Sociological…•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 16

The perennial controversy over quantitative and qualitative methods is addressed from an empirical point of view rather than as a purely methodological or epistemological question. Consideration of empirical findings leads to rejection of the prevailing views that social science is either nomothetic or idiographic and that a significant methodological distinction can be drawn between quantitative and qualitative methods in social research. As a c…

  • On the role of mathematics in the social sciences

    T P Wilson•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•1984•Cited by: 3•References: 7

This paper argues for a heuristic rather than a fundamental role for mathematics in the social sciences. The a priori argument for insisting on a natural‐scientific and mathematical approach to the study of social phenomena is found to rest on an untenable assumption about the powers of standard logic. Further, the requirements of description in the natural sciences are found to conflict irreconcilably with the nature of social interaction and so…

  • Discourse in the Social Sciences

    T P Wilson, Jonathan D Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1983

The authors consider the nature of explanatory models in the social sciences in order to suggest ways in which conceptual systems differ. They suggest that, in many cases, theorists, researchers and clinicians can utilize insights from rival models in building their own models, without sacrificing the integrity of their own work

• On Not Interpreting Coefficients

    Open Access•T P Wilson•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1979•Cited by: 5•References: 3

A recent recommendation by Holt that coefficients resulting from estimating log-linear and similar models should not be interpreted is argued to be based on lack of clarity about the substantive and theoretical importance of the choice between dummy and effect coding for categorical variables. As a consequence, his recommendation applies only when the main concern is for a balance between parsimony and goodness of fit to the data and is inappropr…

A common finding in organizational research is that individuals supervised with "participative" management practices tend to have better relations with superiors and closer relations with peers than do individuals under "bureaucratic" supervision. As an explanation it is proposed that the way subordinates are involved in decisions affecting them influences their attitudes toward themselves in relation to their organizational roles and that these …

THE American Economic Association is performing a useful function in selecting leading articles on economic theory for publication in book form by the Blakiston Company. These volumes are likely to be most convenient for those who are attempting, after the long interval of the war, to refresh their memory with regard to pre-war discussions without embarking on a tedious search through old periodicals. Much depends, of course, upon the choice of a…
