  • Forest Industry Towns in British Columbia

    Patricia Marchak•CHAPTER•Community and Forestry•2019

This chapter describes several forest-based towns in British Columbia. It argues that towns based on resource extraction and a variable market for their product is economically weak. The chapter presents local residents as a solution greater community participation in resource decision-making and management of forest industries. A basic characteristic of single industry towns, including the forest-industry-based towns, is their dependence on the …

L’État-providence …

  • Sociology, Ecology and a Global Economy

    Open Access•Patricia Marchak•ARTICLE•Cahiers de recherche sociologique•2011

This paper presents the main approaches and issues of Anglo-canadian sociology of the last forty years, showing their limits and their theoretical inadequacies. It discusses the current practices of sociologists and asks the question: which social dimensions should be taken into account to strenghten sociological theory. It emphasizes the necessity to go beyond the framework of the social sciences to build a proper understanding of humanity and s…

  • Reigns of Terror

    Patricia Marchak•BOOK•Reigns of Terror•2003

Reigns of Terror is a study of states that have committed gross human rights crimes against their own citizens. Patricia Marchak seeks to discover whether these states have anything in common - whether there are preconditions that can be identified as leading to crimes against humanity so that the world community could take preventive action in similar situations elsewhere. She provides short histories of nine culturally and historically diverse …

Patricia Marchak, Benjamin Cashore et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2002•Cited by: 13

The forests of British Columbia have become a battleground over sustainable resource development, setting environmentalists against the forest industry and forestry workers and communities. In an effort to broker peace, British Columbia's NDP government launched a number of promising new forest policy initiatives in the 1990s. These policies are analyzed by a group of political scientists who focus on how and why change has occurred. They examine…

    Patricia Marchak•REVIEW•Pacific Affairs•1998

This dissertation creates two new theoretical tools to analyze connections between politics and environmental change. The first section develops the concept of Northern ‘shadow ecologies’ to understand the environmental impact of a Northern state on Southern resource management. A Northern shadow ecology is the aggregate environmental impact of government aid and loans; corporate investment and technology transfers; and trade, including purchasin…

Open Access•Terrence H White, Michael Ornstein et al.•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•1980•Cited by: 2

In an expanding economy, growing corporations demand less government interference in their internal affairs. This has never meant less financial support, less use of force in times of unrest or labour strife, or less public involvement in the development of an infrastructure for industry. But it has meant less restriction on appetites for profit, less social welfare legislation, and fewer trade restrictions except when trade restrictions are seen…

  • Labour in A Staples Economy

    Patricia Marchak•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•1979•Cited by: 3

Defences for overcutting the forest on which the British Columbia economy depends are most frequently phrased in terms of protecting employment. They sound a paradoxical overhead noise against technological change that is designed in no small part to reduce employers' dependence on labour, while not in any way reducing the economy's dependence on the export of lumber, pulp, and newsprint to the United States

Les syndiqués présentèrent dans leurs réponses une image qui est à l'opposé des travailleurs non‐syndiqués ayant les mêmes emplois. Les hommes accordent un meilleur appui à leu…
