Daʿwain the Neighborhood: Female-Authored Muslim Students Association Publications, 1963-1980
Founded in 1963 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada (MSA) expanded to 116 local chapters by 1968, with members representing more than forty countries. During the Cold War, the MSA embraced the project ofdaʿwa, or renewing and correcting other Muslims' devotional practice, and improving the public image of Islam. Extant scholarship on the MSA portrays the organization as a…
“I Want to Know the Context”
Through an “ethnography of reading,” this chapter focuses on Webb debates about soteriological pluralism in the Qur’an. Indeed, the US Protestant discourse of religious pluralism has profoundly shaped the ways that American Muslims read and interpret the Qur’an. In particular, Muslims face increasing pressure to affirm, through Qur’anic interpretation and exegesis, that Islam recognizes Judaism and Christianity as salvific faiths, and to downplay…
Imagining Religion and Culture at Webb
This chapter examines how the Webb community imagines itself as an alternative to practices of ethnic particularism in Chicago’s mosques. In particular, the community offers a third space for participants to challenge extant visions of American Islam as practiced in mosques. Webb members reimagine the United States as an ideal site of religious practice, carrying the hope of its participants that American Islam could someday be “seamless.” The Un…
Conclusion
The conclusion examines the significance of third-space religious communities for religious studies, American religions, and the study of American Islam. It argues that scholars should be more attentive to these marginal communities to more adequately account for the contingency and unpredictability of lived religious practices. Looking beyond more visible institutions and dense urban neighborhoods enables researchers to track the ways in which c…
Suburban Islam
Suburban Islam explores how American Muslims have created new kinds of religious communities, known as third spaces, to navigate political and social pressures after 9/11. This book examines how one Chicago community, the Mohammed Alexander Russell Webb Foundation (Webb), has responded to the demands of proving Islam’s compatibility with liberal democracy and embracing the commonalities of their Abrahamic faith. Through dynamic forms of ritual pr…
Interpreting the Qur'an in the US: Religious Pluralism, Tradition, and Context
In the contemporary US, religious pluralism has profoundly shaped the ways that American Muslims read and interpret the Qur'an in their daily lives. In particular, they face increasing pressure to affirm, through Qur'anic interpretation, that Islam recognises Judaism and Christianity as salvific faiths and to downplay Islamic claims to superiority. Through a case study of a US Qur'anic study group, this article explores how American Muslims appro…
