Reckoning Methodism
Darryl Stephens, director of United Methodist Studies at Lancaster Theological Seminary, provides a thoughtful series of interrelated reflections on the United Methodist Church focused on the United States. The book reflects both his deep personal engagement within the UMC and a broad and deep scholarly analysis of the UMC. Writing an analysis of a denomination in the context of crisis and change is a brave act given that events can quickly overt…
"Setting the Bible out of the Question"-Pursuing Justice
One of the core sources for Christian justification or critique of social justice matters is the Bible. One would think that a leading historic Christian figure, like John Wesley, whose theology was closely bound to biblical interpretation, would have used the Bible extensively to argue against an important matter such as (anti-)slavery. However, we find that his argument lacks his usual biblical-centeredness. This article explores this phenomeno…
“Priests are obliged to be turbulent”
Charles Villia-Vicencio's theology developed in the context of the struggle against Apartheid is interpreted as a transposition of key themes from the Methodist theological tradition into a liberative key. This is takes place through Villa-Vicencio's expansion of the notion of salvation and his affirmation of the preferential option for the poor. The article exams the significance of this in relation to the themes of grace and responsibility, the…
Imaging the ‘Exotic Other’
This article examines how John Wesley described the people of Africa, with particular reference to the people of West Africa and the ‘inhabitants of the Cape of Good Hope’. While Wesley has been rightly praised for his opposition to the enslavement of Africans, his descriptions of African people involved editing material from various sources in order to serve theological and rhetorical purposes directed toward his British readers. This produced d…
Methodist Morals
Darryl Stephens, Director of Methodist Studies at Lancaster Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, has written an excellent study of the United Methodist Church's Social Principles as ‘an authentic voice of Methodism, a church faithfully proclaiming its witness in the world’ (9). This positive evaluation of Social Principles is made in full recognition of the complex and often controversial process by which the Social Principles have developed and…
Christen Gemeinde, Bürgergemeinden, Migranten, Aktiengesellschaften, Finanzmärkte
The thesis of this article is that the arrival and non-arrival of African migrants fractures the pseudo innocence of Western Europe exposing its colonial entanglements hence challenging the church to develop a decolonial theological politics. The article develops such a politics by re-examining and reconfiguring elements of Barth’s theological politics. It draws on his understanding of the “lordless powers” and of God taking the side of the poor …
How can Europeans enter the Kingdom of Heaven? A decolonial challenge to Western European political and public theologies in an age of migration
In his 2019 Steve de Gruchy Memorial Lecture John de Gruchy provocatively posed the question: “Is it possible for a white South African male to enter the kingdom of heaven? The core of his concern was how is it possible for a person who was and is still a beneficiary of Apartheid and colonialism in South Africa participate in the creation of a just and transformed society. This question has a particular poignancy in contemporary South Africa wher…
Who Are “the People”? Populism, the “Othered”, and the Public Identity of a Minority Church in Europe
In the context of a rising populism and the othering of migrating minorities this article proposes that a reconstruction of the public identity of a minority Church (The United Methodist Church) provides an important disruptive element directed toward a more just and inclusive democracy. The article draws on biblical and traditional resources, particularly those from within the Methodism to develop an alternative vision of the church. These resou…
God's Makwerekwere
Mass migration and accompanying xenophobia are characteristics of the early 21st century and as such challenge the church to reimagine its identity. This article analyses migration and xenophobia particularly as they impact South Africa and then proposes the model of the church as God s Makwerekwere as an appropriate response. In doing so, it examines New Testament images of the church and argues that the church as God s Makwerekwere is a communi…
