The West’s Teeth: IMF conditionality during the Cold War
Did the International Monetary Fund (IMF) play a role in the United States and its Western allies efforts to contain the advance of communism during the Cold War? To answer this question, we construct a new database containing the number of conditions applied to over 500 IMF loans since 1970 and analyse how the distance from a borrowing country to its closet communist neighbour affected the IMF conditionality. We show that the Fund imposed fewer …
Democracy, autocracy, and sovereign debt: How polity influenced country risk on the peripheries of the global economy, 1870–1913
This article tests the influential democratic advantage hypothesis – that democratic governments have historically borrowed more cheaply than autocratic governments – in the context of the first financial globalization, from circa 1870 to 1913. We construct indicators of political regime types, then regress government bond spreads of 27 independent capital-importing countries on them. In contrast with the mainstream literature, the results sugges…
Dictatorships, Coffee and Bananas: The Political Economy of Sovereign Debt in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, 1871−1911
Costa Rica suspended payments on its London debt in 1901, at the beginning of a democratisation process and during a crisis in the world coffee market. Meanwhile, autocratic Nicaragua, also a coffee exporter, continued paying its foreign creditors. This article assesses the causes of these distinct outcomes, which are at odds with the influential hypothesis that democracy makes for better borrowers. Strongly represented in Congress, Costa Rica's …

The Threat of Communism during the Cold War: A Constraint to Income Inequality
Did the threat of communism influence income distribution in developed capitalist economies during the Cold War? This article addresses this question by testing whether income inequality in OECD countries was related to events linked to the spread of communism—revolutions and Soviet interventions—around the world. We argue that the threat of the spread of communism acted as an incentive for the elites and governments to keep economic inequality l…
Loans of the revolution: How Mexico borrowed as the state collapsed in 1912-13
This article assesses why the French and US banks Paribas and Speyers underwrote a series of loans to revolutionary Mexico in 1912 and 1913, when the state was in the process of collapsing. This is a case of a war debt that failed to prevent the borrowing government from suspending payments and subsequently falling. Based on unpublished primary documents, the article shows that the 1913 loan involved a conflict of interest. The credit delayed a d…
Rothschilds’ “Delicate and Difficult Task”: Reputation, Political Instability, and the Brazilian Rescue Loans of the 1890s
The London House of Rothschild depended on Brazil to maintain its reputation. This became a problem in the 1890s, when the Brazilian government almost defaulted on its sovereign debt after a change of regime had made politics unstable and economic policy unorthodox. This article shows how the relationship between the bank and the state developed to the point that Rothschilds was forced to rescue its client. Exposure enabled Brazil to implement po…
Government versus Bankers: Sovereign Debt Negotiations in Porfirian Mexico, 1888-1910
This article assesses how the government of Porfirio Díaz (1876-1910) negotiated sovereign loans. Mexico was a serial defaulter that established a good reputation and issued bonds abroad at progressively better conditions. Based on new archival material, the article demonstrates that borrowing terms improved not only because of sounder fundamentals, but also due to the efforts of high officials to negotiate with debt underwriters. The Mexicans ne…
Menstrual Irregularity and Menstrual Symptoms
The authors examined whether women with irregular cycles showed more symptoms of menstrual distress than women with regular cycles. One hundred fourteen college women prospectively recorded the dates of 6 to 8 menstrual cycles and replied to a menstrual-symptoms questionnaire. The researchers cross-classified regularity and irregularity, by the women's self-definitions (questionnaire data) and by objective criteria (based on the respondents' pros…
Talking Emotions: Gender Differences in a Variety of Conversational Contexts
Based on numerous studies demonstrating gender differences in both language and emotions, we investigated whether women are more verbally expressive of their feelings than men. Data from eleven samples, based on four methods of data collection (observations, 'hidden' observations, interviews, and content analysis), were analyzed as to whether women used more emotional words than men. In each of the eleven samples, women used significantly more em…
Multiple influences on menstrual synchrony: Kibbutz roommates, their best friends, and their mothers
Menstrual onset dates of women living in kibbutzim were compared with those of their roomates, their best friends in the kibbutz, and their mothers. Since these three groups of women constitute the overwhelming number of the subjects' female interactions, this enabled the examination of multiple influences on menstrual synchrony. Synchrony was found between roommates and between best friends, but not between mothers and daughters. The relationshi…
Attitudes towards mild and severe mental handicap in Israel
Attitudes towards mild and severe mental handicap were examined, as well as whether these attitudes are influenced by social class, sex, religiosity, and order of questionnaire presentation. A second concern was the effect on these attitudes of country of origin, namely Israeli Jews of Western, Yemenite, and Iraqi origin. A random sample of 360 adults completed the Jordan six‐dimensional attitude scale on mental handicap. There was a more positiv…

Effect of Color of Questionnaire on Emotional Responses
We examined whether paper color affects the kind of emotional response obtained from questionnaires. University of Utah students (N = 221) read three vignettes, each describing a murder or rape, and responded by answering a set of eight questions for each case. A three-way analysis of variance was performed in which color (pink, blue, white), type of verdict (guilty, not guilty) and sex were the main effects. The results showed that there were si…

Homosexuals' and Lesbians' Philosophies of Human Nature
The study compares 57 homosexuals and 45 lesbians on six dimensions of beliefs about human nature. On only one dimension, altruism – selfishness, was a significant difference found. While there are no similar studies of the comparison of attitudes and values, the findings are consistent with the few personality studies which likewise reported no differences between homosexuals and lesbians
Philosophies of Human Nature and Perception of Physical Attractiveness
Most studies on beauty have demonstrated advantages accruing to the beautiful person. This research examines the effects of social perceptions of differential perception of beauty; specifically, does one's philosophy of human nature affect perceptions of beauty? Sixty-two men and women rated ten passport pictures on a five point scale from very ugly to very beautiful. They also completed Wrightsman's (1974) Philosophies of Human Nature Scale. Pos…
The Impact of Cultural Context on the Mental Health of Jewish Concentration Camp Survivors
This study examines whether the area of settlement of Jewish concentration camp survivors has an impact on their mental health. Using the Langner mental health index, survivors in Israel are compared with an earlier study of survivors in Montreal. Survivors in Israel score higher than their Montreal counterparts, indicating a greater degree of mental impairment. The suggestion is raised that the numerous memorials and ceremonies commemorating the…

Sociology in Israel
Parental Discipline and Delayed Gratification
It was hypothesized that children brought up under coercive power (exemplified by direct commands, arbitrary power, no explanation and not keeping promises) would be more likely to exhibit immediate gratification, whereas children brought up under noncoercive power would be more likely to delay gratification. 107 junior-high students completed a questionnaire measuring delayed gratification and a questionnaire measuring attitudes towards parental…

Interviewer-Respondent Interaction in Negro and White Family Life Research
Much has been written on the sources of bias in research interviews, and some of these studies deal specifically with the effects of race. The point has been made that interviewees are likely to talk more freely to a complete stranger than to a personal friend or co-worker. Combining the implications of race with the role of the stranger, we suggest three important factors affecting the biracial interview: (1) anonymity, (2) status differences (p…

Comparing Interviews and Observations on Family Functioning
Observations by homemakers on the family functioning of 37 families were compared with interview responses by the same husbands and wives. Both the observational reports and the interviews were rated on a seven-point scale, ranging from inadequate to adequate, for 11 areas of family functioning. Correlations of only two areas of family functioning were found to be statistically significant: source and amount of income and individual behavior and …
