  • Effect of exclusion

    Open Access•Lynnette E Leidy•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1999

The objectives of this study were to identify factors related to history of hysterectomy; to evaluate whether or not subgroups with different rates of hysterectomy also report significantly different mean ages at natural menopause; and to consider how variation in rates of hysterectomy may affect intrapopulation and cross-population comparisons of median ages at natural menopause. Data were drawn from a community sample in upstate New York. It is…

  • Menarche, menopause, and migration

Open Access•Lynnette E Leidy, Lynnette Leidy•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1998

A multigenerational delay in the rise of breast cancer incidence rates has been documented among immigrants to the United States. Prompted by this observation, this study examines three breast cancer risk factors, age at menarche, parity, and age at menopause, in relation to each other and in relation to migration status and language most often used in U.S. Hispanic populations. Mexican American (n = 1,502), Cuban American (n = 534), and Puerto R…

  • Symptoms of menopause in relation to the timing of reproductive events and past menstrual experience

    Open Access•Lynnette E Leidy•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1996

The framework of the lifespan approach is used to examine the frequency of symptoms associated with menopause. Symptom frequencies are examined in relation to past menstrual symptom experience and the timing of reproductive events. Data were drawn from a cross-sectional community survey carried out in Greene County, New York. The symptoms most often reported were hot flashes, irritability, mood changes, sweating, and headaches. Frequencies of vas…

  • Biological Aspects of Menopause

    Lynnette E Leidy•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•1994

"This review outlines the biological basics of menopause and then places menopause within the context of a dynamic lifespan. The basic tenets of the lifespan approach maintain that, for each individual, aging and development are lifelong processes from birth to death; biological, psychological, and sociocultural trajectories interweave across the life course; the entire lifespan serves as a frame of reference for understanding particular events o…

  • Possible Role of the Pessary in the Etiology of Toxic Shock Syndrome

    Open Access•Lynnette E Leidy•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•1994•References: 21

Medical technology often has unforeseen effects on human health. For example, indwelling urethral catheters promote gram-negative endotoxin shock, and improved absorbency in tampons triggered an epidemic of toxic shock syndrome. The pessary is an ancient gynecologic device used to support or position a displaced or prolapsed uterus. As an invasive device, similar to a vaginal tampon or contraceptive diaphragm, the pessary may have increased a wom…

  • The practice of terminal abstinence in Nigeria and Cameroon

    Open Access•Lynnette E Leidy•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1993

World Fertility Survey (WFS) data from Nigeria and Cameroon are used to examine the practice of permanent sexual abstinence in relation to menopause status to test the assumption that terminal abstinence may represent a “cultural menopause.” Terminal abstinence is also examined in relation to cumulative fertility to determine if the cultural practice of abstinence at the biological end of reproductive life affects lifetime fertility. Among marrie…
