This article is a publication of a draft copy of a text entitled “Universal League for Religious and Social Revival” (1927), stored in the writer’s archive at Illinois University. The origin of this text is reconstructed through the context of Merezhkovsky’s social and journalistic activity of the time. It is conjectured that this document grew out of Merezhkovsky’s lecture “Our way to Russia. Irreconcilability or appeasement?” (1927) and the res…

Averkiev and commissioned by A.S. Suvorin. Taking the expectations of the implicit reader into account had made his newspaper and publishing house one of most successful Russian enterprises by the turn of the century. It also aligned with Averkiev’s Kulturträger attitude…

  • “…This plan was conceived by me…”

    Elena A Andrushchenko•ARTICLE•Sibirskii Filologicheskii Zhurnal•2021

The paper clarifies the circumstances of the publication of a little-known letter by D. Merezhkovskiy in the “Mir Iskusstva” (“World of Art”) journal. The letter was published under the same rubric as a letter by Yu. Ozarovskiy, director of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, a person far from the journal’s editorial board, giving the impression of a public debate between like-minded people. Recreating the details of the struggle for setting ancient Greek…
