Antinomies of Modern Science and Technology in the Texts of Andrei Bely (Soviet Period)
For the spiritual situation at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it is appropriate to speak of the project of the new man, which was caused by a grandiose revolution that had various dimensions, including scientific, technological, and artistic aspects. From this perspective, it is useful to distinguish between two models of the relationship between experimental art and science and technology. According to the first model, art assists scie…
Andrey Bely’s Last Public Appearance (1933). Tactics of Self-Description
The article deals with the last public performance of Andrey Belу – an evening with the poet organized on February 11, 1933 in the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow. Memories of those who were there and a review of the evening published in the newspaper “Vechernyaya Moskva” allow reconstructing the atmosphere of that event. Andrey Bely’s Novel Moscow (1926)
The first volume of Andrei Bely’s novel Moscow was completed in 1925 and published by the publishing house “Krug” in 1926 in two parts or two books: Moscow Oddball and Moscow Under Attack. “Only in The History of the Formation of the Self-Conscious Soul Did Bugaev Reveal His Ideas about Music”
Symbolism distinguished itself in world culture in that its representatives were inclined to a dialogue and intersection of different types of art. In Russian literature, one of the brightest examples of such a synthesis is the work of Andrei Bely (Boris Bugaev; 1880–1934). The aim of the present article is to consider the writer’s ideas about music itself. As the main source we use Bely’s treatise The History of the Formation of the Self-Conscio…
Andrey Bely as an Artist vis-à-vis Aleksandr Golovin
Samuil Alyanski, the owner and founder of the Alkonost publishing house (1918–1923), as early as 1918 had decided to issue a journal called Dreamers’ Notes, meant to bring together the Symbolist writers remaining in Russia after the October Revolution, primarily Aleksandr Blok, Vyacheslav Ivanov, and Andrei Bely. Despite the generally accepted view based on the memoirs of Alyanski, Andrei Bely played a leading role in the creation of the journal …
The "Christology" of Bely the Anthroposophist
The article focuses on R. Steiner's perception of the Gospels and the impact of that view on Bely's works. The latter had always valued Steiner's lectures on Christ and the Fifth Gospel, the "Anthroposophic" (relating to the philosophy of human genesis, existence, and outcome) Gospel, the knowledge of which had been received in a visionary way. In addition, Bely was an esoteric follower of Steiner and often quoted from Apostle Paul's 2 Corinthian…
