  • Development and the evolvability of human limbs

Open Access•Nicholas Maurice Young, Nathan M Young et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2010

The long legs and short arms of humans are distinctive for a primate, the result of selection acting in opposite directions on each limb at different points in our evolutionary history. This mosaic pattern challenges our understanding of the relationship of development and evolvability because limbs are serially homologous and genetic correlations should act as a significant constraint on their independent evolution. Here we test a developmental …

  • Evensuperheroesneed a Network: Harriet Tubman and the Rise of Insurgency in the New York State Underground Railroad

Open Access•Nicholas Maurice Young, Nicholas Young et al.•ARTICLE•Du Bois Review Social Science…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 23

We analyze historical data to conduct an exploratory structural investigation into the process that Harriet Tubman used to free her family and friends as a member of the New York State Underground Railroad (UGRR). We suggest that she accomplished this feat because of her ability to rely on embedded (Granovetter 1985; Uzzi 1996) network contacts that allowed her to bridge structural holes (Burt 1992) and link with people with whom she was not prev…

  • Timing primate evolution: Lessons from the discordance between molecular and paleontological estimates

    Open Access•M E Steiper, Nicholas Maurice Young•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2008

The molecular clock has become an increasingly important tool in evolutionary biology and biological anthropology. Nevertheless, a source of contention with respect to this method is the frequent discordance with fossil‐based estimates of divergence times. The primate radiation is a case in point: Numerous studies have dated the major primate nodes (reviewed in Steiper and Young, 1 , 2 ) and there are many instances where molecular and fossil‐bas…

  • A comparison of the ontogeny of shape variation in the anthropoid scapula: Functional and phylogenetic signal

    Open Access•Nicholas Maurice Young, Nathan M Young•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2008•Cited by: 26•References: 68

This article compares ontogenetic shape variation in the scapula of 17 anthropoid species using three‐dimensional landmark‐based geometric morphometrics. These data are used to investigate functional and phylogenetic signal in the major components of scapular variation and to evaluate the degree to which postnatal growth contributes to interspecific differences in shape. Results indicate that the shape of the infant and adult scapula is primarily…
