Adverbs and particles at the form–meaning interface
Adverbs and Particles at the Form-Meaning Interface
Adverbs and Particles at the Form-Meaning Interface offers a comprehensive investigation of two word classes that play a crucial role at the interfaces and have posed challenges for linguistic theory. Drawing on a broad typological range, including Germanic, Romance, Basque, and Heritage Greek, this volume sheds new light on the role of adverbs and particles at the interfaces between morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics from both a synch…
Ways of expressing modality
This paper introduces the present volume, in which modal particles and other expressions of modality are studied from an interdisciplinary and crosslinguistic perspective, with a special focus on the comparison between German and Italian. The contributions address two broad dimensions: the interdisciplinary study of modal particles, including their grammatical, pragmatic, and multimodal properties, and the crosslinguistic investigation of modalit…
On etwa as a modal particle at the syntax-semantics interface
This paper deals with a less-researched modal particle of German, specifically etwa. Although the particle appears in different clause types, it will be shown to be generally more constrained from an illocutionary point of view. Drawing on observations in the literature that the presence of the particle consistently characterizes the propositional content of an utterance as unexpected or undesirable, it will be argued that assuming a FALSUM opera…
Ways of grammaticalizing modal particles
By building upon recent research on German modal particles, the present paper intends to investigate the hypothesis that, like in German, modal particles in Italian only grammaticalized from certain classes of adverbs. It compares their origin in both languages and especially emphasizes syntactic similarities in the changes in the internal and external syntax of these elements. In particular, it is argued that modal particles are grammaticalized …
Peripheral versus non-peripheral optative particles
Discourse particles have been often associated with the sentence peripheries. However, considering for instance optative particles, we observe that their distribution can vary cross-linguistically, since some languages use middle-field particles, while other display left-peripheral particles. In addition, we observe further differences between these two groups, for instance, the grammaticalization process of optative left-peripheral particles is …
Relative Clauses in Old High German
In this paper, we investigate the properties of Old High German relative clauses. A striking fact is that the finite verb in these constructions may either precede or follow its object(s). We survey different possible factors proposed in the literature that could determine the relative order of the verb and its objects (VO/OV order), such as type, time, and place of origin of the text, information-structural properties of the object of the relati…
Inversions after und as a V1 Pattern in Middle High German
In the following paper, we claim that the so-called Inversionen nach und are instances of V1 clauses. Although these constructions are attested from Old High German to the 19th century, we focus on the Middle High German period. Our arguments are based upon information- and discourse-structural properties. These clauses share typical properties of V1 clauses, namely, the absence of a topic-comment division, their relevance for textual cohesion, t…
