  • Excerpt from “The Place of Grace in Anthropology”

    Julian Pitt-Rivers, Julian A Pitt-Rivers•CHAPTER•Anthropology of Catholicism•2017

Julian Pitt-Rivers’s masterful essay was originally published in 1992 as the culminating piece in Honor and Grace in Anthropology , a volume that this renowned ethnographer of the Spanish Mediterranean and student of E. E. Evans-Pritchard at Oxford edited with his colleague J. G. Peristiany, almost a decade before his death in 2001. The essay reveals the erudition and breadth of his ethnographic vision. Why, asks Pitt-Rivers, despite its implied …

  • From Hospitality to Grace: A Julian Pitt-Rivers Omnibus

    Open Access•Julian Pitt-Rivers•BOOK•From Hospitality to Grace•2017

The Pitt-Rivers Omnibus brings together the definitive essays and lectures of the influential social anthropologist Julian A. Pitt-Rivers, a corpus of work that has, until now, remained scattered, untranslated, and unedited. Illuminating the themes and topics that he engaged throughout his life—including hospitality, grace, the symbolic economy of reciprocity, kinship, the paradoxes of friendship, ritual logics, the anthropology of dress, and mor…

  • The paradox of friendship

    Open Access•Julian Pitt-Rivers•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 5

This paper argues that the opposition between kin and friend is analytically misleading. Analogously, the notion of "fictive kinship" is unsuitable to describe forms of relatedness such as blood brotherhood, god parenthood, or "friendship" itself. Each of these social forms generates contradictions that ideas of kinship cannot fully resolve, and these problems would seem to be part of friendship's subject matter. The paradox of friendship, with i…

  • The law of hospitality

    Open Access•Julian Pitt-Rivers•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2012•Cited by: 61

Fustel de Coulanges explains that in the city of antiquity a stranger possessed no status in law nor in religion and that it was necessary for him to have a patron in order to gain the protection of the local laws and Gods. To offend the newcomer was to offend his patron since by the code of hospitality the two were allied in this way. 'L'étranger se rattachait par cet intermédiaire à la cité'.4 The provisions of Arab hospitality are not dissimil…

  • A personal memoir

    Open Access•Julian Pitt-Rivers•ARTICLE•Disparidades.

A revised consideration of bride-price and dowry is presented. Marriage payments are viewed as status symbols and mechanisms of fluidity relating to stratification systems. An inability to carry out exchange "in kind" (i.e., bride for bride) appears in cases of marriage between groups of different status and is shaped by cultural principles of stratification. The phenomena of hypergamy, hypogamy, and isogamy, along with different exchange currenc…

When Meyer Fortes felt the need to find a term to express the peculiar quality of relationships between kin, that which distinguishes them from other sorts of relationship, it appears to me significant that he should have chosen ‘amity’. He suggests this word as the succinct rendering of the ‘set of normative premises...focused upon a general and fundamental axiom which I call the axiom of prescriptive altruism’. It is well known that the attitudes of the Latin Americans towardsraceare not the same as those of the inhabitants of Europe and the United States. This observation led scholars as distinguished as Gilberto Freire and Arnold Toynbee to put forward the view that there is no 'race prejudice' in Latin America, a view that has been criticised by more recent writers. In Latin America distinctions of 'race' are indeed made, but not on the basis of the …

Radcliffe-Brown used to define social anthropology as 'comparative sociology', yet the school of thought that he engendered has not been much prone to comparison. Indeed, in their revulsion from the 'comparative method' of their evolutionist predecessors anthropologists of that tendency have largely avoided formal comparison and left to the "non-comparative" sociologists the duty of comparing. The definition nevertheless still has a certain valid…

The concept of social class is central to the discussion of the structure of any modern European community, for it concerns the differentiation of its members in terms of superiority and inferiority, the ties of reciprocity between them and the bond of solidarity based upon equality. Yet there is little agreement as to the status or proper usage of the term among social scientists and where there is it tends to lie in the acceptance of a set of s…
