Just a Philomath, not a Polymath: Did the Paradigm of Integration-Interconnection of Sciences Obscure or Illuminate the Study of the Qur’an and Tafsir in Academic Institution
“You can blame me, that I started (the Integration-Interconnection of Science, hereinafter referred to as I-Con) from a theological (agenda), but my theology is not your theology. The difference (between them) is in the cross-reference of (sciences)”. This was Amin Abdullah’s response to a question addressed to him on whether the I-Con mega project is better regarded as an academic or theological agenda, a query that will always haunt it for year…

Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover: Chronologically Reading Ibn ‘Atiyyah’s Interpretation of the Zakāh Passages
This paper traces a chronological interpretation of the Qur’ān in a synchronic tafsir work (musalsal-type). It investigates Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah’s commentary (al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz) on seven zakāh verses (7:156, 27:3, 41:7, 2:43, 2:277, 5:55, 9:71), which represent the Meccan, early Medinan and late Medinan revelations, according to the traditional theory of chronology. The macro-analysis is carried out by approaching al-Muḥarrar as a commentary that gath…
Qur’anic Exegesis for Commoners: A Thematic Sketch of Non-Academic Tafsīr Works in Indonesia
This article deals with two scholarly tafsīr books circulating throughout modern Indonesia: Husein Qadri’s (1906-1966) “Senjata Mukmin” (The Weapons of the Believers) and Agus Purwanto’s (b. 1964) “Nalar Ayat-Ayat Semesta” (Reasoning of the Verses of the Universe). Qadri, representing his position as Muslim scholar, and Purwanto, as Muslim intellectual, contribute to the shaping of lay exegesis in their country. I conclude that although the two w…
