Taking Weight Out of the Equation
Weight-neutral approaches emphasize improving individuals’ relationships with food and prioritizing emotional and physical well-being over the pursuit of a lower weight as well as support the reduction of stigma experienced by persons with larger bodies. Discourse about health in schools needs to consider students of all sizes as well as the complexities of the relationship that individuals develop with their bodies. A comprehensive school health…

“Teacher Burnout Is One of My Greatest Fears”
Teacher burnout is often positioned as a common result of the complex demands of the teaching profession (García-Carmona et al., 2019). While there is no denying the demanding nature of teaching, in this article we present an alternative perspective on the widespread burnout discussion that distinguishes between burnout and the complexities of teacher attrition, and offer a more hopeful and strengths-based approach to the teaching profession. In …
Glimpses of acceptance through problem frames
Bias and stereotypes can be reinforced or challenged through television entertainment, and individual viewers will negotiate their interpretation of such public pedagogies through the lenses of their own knowledge and experience. The popular show This is Us presents multiple and sometimes contradicting messages about fatness and weight stigma. A close textual analysis of the first three seasons of the series revealed some of the complex and impli…

Changing Western European Visions of Christian Afterlives, 1350–1700
The chapter presents a survey of changing beliefs in the afterlife across the period 1300–1700. By the later Middle Ages in western Europe, the relationship between the living and the afterlife was mediated in large part by the Catholic Church. The souls of the departed went to hell or to heaven, the latter usually after a time in purgatory. The destination of the soul was determined by an individual’s actions in this life, but the length of time…
Jérémie Foa’s excellent and highly readable Le tombeau de la paix is the published version of his doctoral thesis, supervised by Olivier Christin at Lumière Lyons 2. It is a study of the commissioners of the edicts of pacification, royal judges sent by the Crown into the French provinces to make peace after the civil wars of 1562–3 and 1567–70, responsible for implementing the edicts of Amboise (1563) and Saint-Germain (1570). The commissioners’ …

The Sea and Souls
If God had not given a natural inclination to some with regard to things of the sea, I do not believe that anyone would ever dare to go upon it. ... Barely has a long voyage begun when fresh water becomes so short that one is reduced to drinking so little that thirst is provoked rather than quenched ... Food shortages are so frequent that one is often forced to eat rats and ship’s leather ... One has difficulty in deciding which is the more insup…

Nantes and the Origins of the Catholic League of 1589
The Catholic League in Nantes was a movement for urban defense led by a majority of the municipal elites. It was not simply a defensive movement against a predatory crown, but was the culmination of a resurgence of urban autonomy originating in the crown's inability to defend the city against external threats, both Huguenot military forces and royal army commanders active in the province. The League in Nantes was an urban and not an aristocratic …
