Does religiosity affect attitudes towards homosexuality? Evidence from the European Social Survey (ESS)
Purpose Religiosity remains one of the most consistent predictors of moral conservatism in contemporary Europe, particularly in shaping public attitudes toward homosexuality (Lin et al., 2021; Janssen and Scheepers, 2019). Drawing on data from Round 9 (2018) of the European Social Survey, this study aims to investigate how both the intensity of religious commitment and religious affiliation influence support for homosexuality across 28 European c…
Does the quality of government affect economic growth Evidence from the QOG dataset
Does the quality of government (QoG) affect economic growth? The paper considers whether or not a higher governance quality leads to a higher rate of economic growth. This paper sheds light on this debate by reinvestigating the relationship between the quality of government and economic growth, utilising four different operationalisations of governance quality, including the rule of law, quality of democracy, public integrity, and governance from…

Building cultural intelligence through supervisor support
This study offers a new perspective on how organisational factors influence migrant workers' cultural intelligence (CQ) by examining a moderated mediation model of the mechanism underlying the relationship between perceived supervisor support and CQ. We tested our model using a survey on a sample of 462 migrants. We found that employees' social exchange and subjective career success mediated the relationship between their perceptions of superviso…
The well‐being and voice of migrant workers in participatory organizational interventions
Organizational interventions that draw on participatory processes to tap into the views of workers can benefit both the health of workers and their organizations. However, the frameworks used to develop participatory organizational interventions are often described in a generic, ‘one‐size‐fits‐all’ manner. Considering the specific needs of diverse groups such as migrants is important, given current migration rates globally. Using the literature o…
Moral Disengagement at Work
Mediating an invisible policy problem
This paper presents a qualitative case study of community participation in local air quality management in Nottingham (UK). We analyse Nottingham’s response to a “clean air zone” mandate: despite national government and local community support of this congestion charging policy, the City Council rejected the measure. We focus on the policy framing, with data from policy documents, interviews with government and non-government actors, and observat…

Nottingham’s urban sustainability fix as creative environmental commercialization
Given that Nottingham (UK) has some of the most deprived areas and the deepest budget cuts in England yet holds the title of the UK’s most energy self-sufficient city, this paper explores the question: how has the Nottingham City Council localized the urban sustainability fix to reach environmental goals? Applying the “urban sustainability fix” concept, we find that during austerity and devolution, Nottingham’s response has been to develop creati…
Socio-Economic Disparities in Attitude and Preference for Menu Labels among Vietnamese Restaurant Customers
Calories and nutrition labeling on restaurant menus are powerful policy interventions to reduce the burden of obesity epidemic. However, the success of this policy requires an assurance of equal benefits among customers with different characteristics, especially people at a higher risk of poor health outcomes and eating habits. This study examined the sociodemographic disparities in the attitude and preference for calories and nutrition labeling …
Feasibility of e-Health Interventions on Smoking Cessation among Vietnamese Active Internet Users
Introduction: Although e-health interventions are widely implemented as a supportive measure to smoking cessation, there is a lack of evidence in the feasibility of its application among Vietnamese youths, which is considered to be one of the most frequent internet using populations. This study assessed the quitting attempts among smokers and their preference and willingness to pay for smartphone-based cessation supporting applications in a sampl…
Factors Associated with Cigarette Smoking and Motivation to Quit among Street Food Sellers in Vietnam
Since 2013, smoke-free signs in public places, including in restaurants and food stores, have been introduced in Vietnam, aiming to prevent passive smoking. Although extensive research has been carried out on second-hand smoking among clients in public places (e.g., hospitals, restaurants) in Vietnam, no single study exists which captures the current practice of smoking among street food outlets. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of smok…
The Gender Wage Gap in the Vietnamese Transition, 1993–2008
This essay examines wages and the gender wage gap between 1993 and 2008 in Vietnam. Our results reveal a slight increase in the mean of the gender wage gap from 2002 to 2008, which is mainly driven by a sharp increase in the gender wage gap for low-wage workers. Decomposition results suggest that the major part of the gender wage gap attributes to gender discrimination. While gender discrimination decreases for high-wage workers, it increases for…

Artifacts, Tools, and Classrooms
Although schools contain many material artifacts, studies in classrooms have tended to focus on discourse and quality of social interaction even when artifacts are being used. Responding to Engstrom's (1999) invitation to take artifacts seriously, three studies are described in which a material object was essential to a classroom activity. The first artifact was an enlarged text which had been transferred to a flip chart for the purpose of shared…
