Covid-19 Pandemic-Related Stressors and Black Mothers’ Mental Health
We conducted a convergent mixed-methods study to assess the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black mothers’ mental health. Black mothers ( N = 88) completed measures of pandemic-related stressors, mental health, racial centrality, and social support; 44 mothers participated in focus groups assessing mothers’ pandemic-related stressors and coping strategies. Results of bootstrapped hierarchical linear regression analyses showed that pandemic-…
Black Parents' Rationales for Using Specific Ethnic-Racial Socialization Practices With Their Young Children
Existing literature shows Black parents' preference for using certain ethnic-racial socialization strategies (e.g., cultural socialization, egalitarianism) over others (e.g., preparation for bias, promotion of mistrust) with their young children. We sought to understand parents' utilization of, and rationales for using, specific ethnic-racial socialization practices with their young children. We conducted focus groups with 26 Black parents of chi…
My Anxiety Has Been Heightened
Black mothers experienced heightened concern about their children returning to in-person learning following COVID-19 related remote learning. Guided by critical race theory and racial protectionism, we sought to deepen our understanding of Black mothers' concerns and experiences related to their preschoolers' return to in-person learning during the 2021 to 2022 academic school year. We conducted five focus groups. Eighteen Black mothers (mean age…
Black Americans' Racism-Based Traumatic Stress Reactions Following the January 6 Capitol Insurrection
When insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Black Americans were especially affected by the racial implications of the attack. Guided by research on vicarious institutional racism, researchers sought to understand how Black Americans reacted to and coped with racism-based stress following the Capitol insurrection. Six focus groups were held with Black Americans living in the DC metropolitan area at the time of the attack. T…

Detecting chord tone alterations and suspensions
Chord detection is the task of assigning chord labels to segments of an input musical piece. The labels are typically drawn from a pre-defined vocabulary in which each symbol comprises at least a root pitch and a chord quality. In this paper, we introduce a post-processing method that takes as input a musical score with such labels and adds chord tone alterations such as suspensions to them. Although it is an important aspect of harmonic analysis…

HMM-Based Voice Separation of MIDI Performance
Voice separation is an important component of Music Information Retrieval (MIR). In this paper, we present an HMM which can be used to separate music performance data in the form of MIDI into monophonic voices. It works on two basic principles: that consecutive notes within a single voice will tend to occur on similar pitches, and that there are short (if any) temporal gaps between them. We also present an incremental algorithm which can perform …
Thinking-Aloud About Stereotypical Mainstream and Opiate-Dependent Lifestyle Images
Participants (6 male, 4 female) on a methadone maintenance program completed a Think-Aloud procedure while viewing two stereotypical picture sets depicting opiate-dependent and mainstream lifestyles. Discourse analysis indicated that participants used two different discourses: a stereotype-affirming defensive discourse, which involved affirming the negative and positive stereotypes regarding opiate-dependent and mainstream lifestyles, and a stere…
Thirty Years of Listening to Children
Alison McLeod looks back over the last 30 years to see how the theory, policy and practice of listening to children in the UK have developed
Whose agenda? Issues of power and relationship when listening to looked‐after young people
Listening to children and young people is for social workers a legal requirement, it is also believed to lead to better outcomes and is increasingly promoted in policy. The practice of listening is, however, rarely straightforward, and this is particularly the case with socially excluded groups. As a result, the voices of the marginalized are less likely to be heard. In this paper the author draws on interview data from a research study into comm…
Respect or Empowerment
Alison McLeod describes a research project that explored the effectiveness of communication between social workers and young people in care. Interviews with young people revealed that, even though their social workers had described making significant efforts to listen to them, the young people did not feel their voices were heard. It is argued that this contradiction arises because the adults and the children understood something different by the…
