Women-Led Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises During Covid-19
This study synthesizes evidence on gender dimensions of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) following the COVID-19 pandemic. Women-led SMEs are associated with lower average profits, lower revenues, fewer employees, smaller networks, and higher costs of capital. Reading Fiction and Economic Preferences of Rural Youth in Burkina Faso
A field experiment generated random variation in access to fiction for youth living in villages in southwestern Burkina Faso to test whether reading fiction affects economic preferences. There were few differences in trust, contribution to public goods, risk, and patience between those participating in the reading program and the control group. Initial efforts to enhance economic development in colonial and postcolonial nations and territories paid little attention either to women or inequality between the sexes. The Development of Public Libraries in the United States, 1870–1930
The period 1870–1930 witnessed the emergence of the local public library as a widespread and enduring American institution. We document the expansion of public libraries in the United States using data drawn from library surveys conducted by the federal Bureau of Education. Data on rainfall patterns only weakly corroborate the claim that climate change explains the Darfur conflict that began in 2003 and has claimed more than 200 000 lives and displaced more than two million persons.
