Jagannath Adhikari, Mahendra Kumar Rai et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2023•Cited by: 8•References: 24

This paper examines the effectiveness of migration policies in dealing with the challenges that Nepalese migrants faced during this pandemic from a disaster justice perspective. Like in other periods of natural or human-made crises, the Nepal Government brought new policies and programmes to help the victims in their reintegration. • Stories of circulations in the Himalayas

Open Access•Stéphane Gros, Jagannath Adhikari et al.•ARTICLE•European Bulletin of Himalayan…•2022

Introduction There are many ways to travel. People of the Himalayas often travel out of necessity rather than for leisure: on foot, as in the past, but now increasingly by motorised means. Their motivations can be diverse and the distances covered change according to the mode of travel. The Himalayan mountains still impose constraints that new infrastructure can only partially overcome. The Himalayan range – despite its high peaks, the tumultuous…

  • How does Transnational Labour Migration Shape Food Security and Food Sovereignty? Evidence from Nepal

    Ramesh Sunam, Jagannath Adhikari•ARTICLE•Anthropological Forum•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Achieving food security has become a critical development issue. It is more so for Nepal, a country facing serious social and economic problems. In recent years, Nepal has seen rising temporary-work migration of people to foreign countries with implications for food security, even in distant rural places. In this article, we examine differential effects of transnational labour migration on food security and food sovereignty in migrant-sending rur…

  • Foreign Labor Migration and the Remittance Economy of Nepal

David Seddon, Jagannath Adhikari et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Concerned Asian…•2002

Official statistics seriously underestimate the number of Nepali migrant workers abroad and both the volume and value of remittances flowing back into Nepal from those workers. Original research by the authors suggests that many migrant workers abroad are working illegally and unofficially, and that the bulk of remittances also flow back into Nepal informally and illegally. The scale of remittances, consequently, is at least ten times greater tha…

  • Rural Livelihoods at Risk How Nepalese Farmers Cope with Food Insecurity

Open Access•Hans‐georg Bohle, Hans-Georg Bohle et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1998

Since the early 1990s, Nepal has changed from a net exporter to a net importer of food. Nearly half of Nepal's districts have become deficient in food. The situation is most serious for peripheral mountain regions of the Middle Hills. The paper con- centrates on food deficient village communities in fragile mountain tracts of Nepal. It is based on household surveys in six periph- eral mountain villages. More than fifty percent of all households a…
