People evaluate idle collaborators based on their impact on task efficiency
Humans collaborate to improve productivity, but when is it acceptable for a collaborator to remain idle? Theories from distributed computer systems suggest that, depending on the task structure, division of labor leads to diminishing returns in efficiency as group size increases. We examine whether people are aware of these limitations to collaboration, and how considerations of task efficiency may affect the perceived acceptability of idleness, …
Who knows what Mary knew? An experimental study
This paper reports the results of an experimental philosophy study of intuitions among members of the general US population regarding a version of Frank Jackson’s famous ‘Mary in the black and white room’ thought experiment. A large majority of respondents (82.1%, significantly above chance) reported having the intuition which is critical to the thought experiment, i.e., that Mary does not know what it is like to see red before she actually sees …
How does the reliability of a model affect children's choice to learn socially or individually?
The effect of model reliability on children's choices to learn socially versus individually is pertinent to theories addressing cultural evolution and theories of selective trust. Here the effect of a reliable versus unreliable model on children's preferences to learn socially or individually was examined, as well as their subsequent imitation on a puzzle box task. Experiment One (N = 156) found children were more likely to ask to learn socially …
