  • Language comprehension models at different levels of explanation

    Open Access•Mark Colvin, Tessa Warren•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2020•References: 51

This paper reviews two recent models of language comprehension, the RI-Val model (Cook & O'Brien, 2014; O'Brien & Cook, 2016b) and the dynamic generative framework (Kuperberg, 2016). Both of these models have been heavily informed by research on the processing of semantic anomalies, but they have arisen in different literatures. The RI-Val model has roots in the text processing literature and focuses primarily on bottom-up aspects of comprehensio…

  • The Pains of Imprisonment Revisited: The Impact of Strain on Inmate Recidivism

Shelley Johnson Listwan, C Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Justice Quarterly•2013

Recent research suggests that imprisonment may increase subsequent levels of offending, but it is not clear why this is the case. Drawing on general strain theory (GST), this study examines whether exposure to the strains associated with imprisonment affects recidivism. These strains include direct victimization, the perception of a threatening prison environment, and hostile relationships with correctional officers. Consistent with GST, data fro…

  • Victimization, Social Support, and Psychological Well-Being: A Study of Recently Released Prisoners

Open Access•Shelley Johnson Listwan, Mark Colvin et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2010

The effect of violence on individual behavior has been well documented. However, the empirical literature surrounding the relationship between coercive prison environments and inmate well-being is limited. This is important not only for correctional administrators but also for reentry planning. Using a sample of 1,616 recently released male inmates, this study examines the psychological effect of victimization and of perceptions of threat and coe…

  • Coercion, Social Support, and Crime: An Emerging Theoretical Consensus

    Open Access•Mark Colvin, Francis T Cullen et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2002•Cited by: 84•References: 39

Two themes, coercion and social support, have emerged over the past two decades in criminology that can be used to build a new integrated theory of crime. The authors provide a review of recent theoretical developments in criminology to demonstrate that two interconnected themes provide the basis for a new consensus in theory and crime policy. With some important exceptions, coercion causes crime and social support prevents crime. The authors dev…

Various theorists posit that the rate of unemployment is linked to the rates of both welfare and imprisonment. This assumes a competitive labor market tied to specific controls of surplus populations. This article argues that contemporary labor markets lie on a continuum between competitive (secondary) and relatively non-competitive (primary) structures which creates a pattern of labor market segmentation. Such segmentation is linked with specifi…
